1. good reason
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (02.15.13)
There are many more, far more photogenic incidents of dead children in Syria, Libya, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Unlike the real events there, the advantage of Gaza is that you have professional lighting, and the actors have better makeup and are willing to pose until the perfect photograph is taken. And of course, in places like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and Pakistan you can get killed. I am certain that after taking these great photos, Hansen went to celebrate in Tel Aviv with a nice cold beer.
2. Ist Prize Photo
BOB ,   YERUSHALAYIM   (02.15.13)
can anyone ever recall a photo of a suicide bomber blowing up Jews, or buses or missiles coming into Israel ever winning an award? or how about drivers having their heads broken by rocks or children intentionally killed in their beds getting world sympathy. Perhaps my memory deceives me.
3. Between arab celebration of death and these
Yosi ,   Gilo-Jerusalem   (02.15.13)
sick journalist trying to win prizes and notoriety, I don't know which is sicker. The arabs and europeans are trully descending into the depths of their depravity.
4. The leftist press will always try to portray..
Beary White ,   Norway   (02.15.13)
..Israel as the big sinner. What about all the kilings in Syria, and other so called islamic peaceful countries :-) with pictures of bodies of kids torn apart, female girls raped and skinned by torturists, sexual abuse of reporters in islamic countries. Then, this picture-award is just a proven evidence of leftist newspapers/media on a constant run for anti-israel stuff. So, leftist reporters, take a piss..
5. Touching photograph
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.15.13)
What a pity he was not available to photograph the funeral of the Fogel family, z"l. That would have been THREE children. Not to mention their mother and father.
6. Are you sure about this...?
Ed Ford ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.15.13)
If you Google the awards for 2012, this picture does not appear anywhere and does not appear to have won anything.
7. Putting Sweden in context
Steve Klein   (02.15.13)
"Neutral nations thwarted the destruction of German industry. Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain all carried on robust and profitable trade with Germany, to the ongoing frustration of the Allies...The neutrals profited handsomely from their relations with Berlin. The Swedes supplied the Reich iron ore, canned fish, and ball bearings....The Swedes were stubborn when pressed to limit trade with Germany, wrote Dean Acheson, then an assistant secretary in the State Department...." 8. A DIFFERENT LENS
BRANT ,   Hilton Head USA   (02.15.13)
WOnder if any of these wonderful photojournalists ever won an award for photos of Israeli babies and grandmothers torn to shreds by Palestinian bombs; or awards for photos of the Arab children how were blown to bits by Hizballah rockets in 2006, Oh wait. sorry, they don't really even take photos of that stuff, do they?
9. There were no good photos of dead syrians Arabs
Yossef   (02.15.13)
10. Human Shields
Moshico ,   Jerusalem   (02.15.13)
If they loved their children they would not be used as human shields and this picture would not be valid and therefore would not have won a prize. But since they will continue to use their children as human shields then more of these pictures will be able to win prizes.
11. Victims
MR   (02.15.13)
No doubt a tragedy, but an unintentional one. Obviously the IDF was not after those innocent kids. What about the Dolphinarium terror attack, intentionally carried out and the photo of a mother touching the bodies of both her daughters that were murdered there? It was an extraordinarily moving picture that received no award and no comment.
12. "Violence in the Middle East...was the dominant theme"
A ,   Belgium   (02.15.13)
So if Hamas hadn't fired rockets into Israel, and if Israel had let the rockets fall without retaliating to protect Israeli citizens INCLUDING children, the photographers might not have recieved "the highest honor you can get in the profession"? What a shame that they win awards by honoring "palestinian" terrorism and as a result, the unfortunate deaths of innocent children.
13. And the daily slaughter continues in Syria. Any photos?
Cynic ,   uSA   (02.15.13)
This poor excuse for a human being is so happy that he can exploit the death of children in wartime to express his Jew hatred.
14. The World Sees with blind eyes and hears with deaf ears
George ,   Jerusalem   (02.15.13)
15. The pilot pressed the button from a safe distance.
Albrecht ,   EU   (02.15.13)
While the "goim" have to hear again and again: "He who saves one life saves the world entire"
16. Porno for Palis
Arturo   (02.15.13)
This is propaganda, not photojournalism. Imagine photos of the massacred women and children in Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Libya etc.
17. all that photoshopping paid off.
(02.15.13)
18. Hansen should be greatful to Pallywood.
Yossi ,   Arad   (02.15.13)
Where was he when buses were blowing up in telaviv with hundreds of body parts scattered all around. Disgusting.
19. Modern terrorism is tailored to exploit the media.
Steve ,   UK   (02.15.13)
This is just another example of how modern terrorism is tailored to exploit the media, and how a certain mindset and ideology is prepared to exploit the dead, even the dead bodies of children. I am a photographer and the standards that some in my profession are prepared to stoop to for recognition in such quarters sickens me. Scruples and moral integrity have died in the street.
20. Another that Hamas wanted
Ron ,   LA   (02.15.13)
Better that the photographer took pictures of desd Arabs than dead Jews. Hamas declared victory in this last war and the good people of Gaza voted Hamas in.
21. To: No. 15
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.15.13)
How about all the pilots who pressed the button on around one million Iraqi civilians and an equal number of Afghani civilians? Were they at a safe distance? Were those Iraqi and Afghani civilians firing missile barrages at civilians in the United States or civilians in the U.K.? Or any other member state of NATO? No, they weren't. But terrorist elements in Gaza WERE firing missile barrages at Israeli civilians. Do keep that in mind.
22. Are we certain ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.15.13)
.... that the funeral was photographed in Gaza? Perhaps it actually took place in Syria. Are the children really dead? Remember the photographer who discovered that a picture he had shot several weeks earlier of a dead Syrian child was being passed around as a dead child in Gaza?
23. #22
Jordan Ariel ,   USA   (02.16.13)
Sarah - on post 22 you read my mind... my first thought was that it could be another Al Dura scam.
24. The real problem with World Press
Where are the real ,   pictures?   (02.16.13)
Photo is that they are blind for the other side, the Israeli one. They cannot see the Fogel children massacred by Palestinian terrorists together with their parents. They cannot see the 10 month old Israeli baby shot by a Palestinian sharp shooter in its head a few years back. They cannot see the great amount of unsolicited terror coming from Hamas, Hezbollah and Alqaeda in the form of rockets lobbed into Israel, bus bombs in Tel Aviv and elsewhere, killing Israeli tourists at Burgas in Bulgaria and so on. The list is so long that one should go to a data base for more information. So, when World Press Photo starts behaving impartially and without any stereotype, please let me know to congratulate them. Till then, they are nonexistent for me !
