1. I don't blame Ben Zygier
Eli ,   Jerusalem   (02.19.13)
I blame his handlers. It wouldn't take a lot for any countrry's security to 'notice" that someone changes their name 4 times and gets new passports. Zygier probably broke under questioining and that may not be noble but he was unprepared and unfit for the work given to him. For that he gets locked up as prisoner x, deprived of human rights, put in isolation until he "drew the proper conclusions." Israel needs to apologize for killing a young idealistic oleh who had no business doing what he was doing.
2. zygier
rm ,   Amsterdam NL   (02.19.13)
What he did exactly will probably never be known though I am guessing it must have been a little more than just contacting an agency. No amount of Israeli white-wash can hide the fact that his treatment was pretty harsh.
3. The only conclusion is
Sarah B ,   Tel Aviv/Israel   (02.19.13)
that many Olem who make aliyah to Israel tell Mossad NO when asked if they can use their second passport. So when someone is naive enough to say yes, the pressure place on that person by Mossad is ridiculous. Using someone's passport once or twice is probably as many times as you can use it over a person's lifetime (average passport lasts 10 years) to expect someone to change his over several years shows a lack of foresight, idiocy or arrogance.
4. Zygier was detained as he was a spy for the enemy..period
Al   (02.19.13)
That is the god damn bloody truth. He endangers the Jews of Israel thru his actions period. He did himself in because he was afraid to face the music period. He endangered the very soldiers and country he swore to protect. End of story ..more on and let this be a lesson to any wannabe spy for the enemies of Israel.
5. Death of an agent
Aya ,   Haifa,Israel   (02.19.13)
Whatever he may have done he didn't deserve what he got. i'm ashame of my country.
6. This man was an Australian citizen....
Robert ,   Australia   (02.19.13)
....as such he was duty bound to protect Australia. He was put in an invidious position by Israel such that he did harm to Australia whilst serving Israel's interests. That is not the behaviour expected from a country against an ally.
7. # 4 And you know that for a fact
ben   (02.19.13)
Lets see Austraila tell Israel to stop using Australian passports to carry out operations. Zygier is arrested in 2010 by and reportedly tell ASIO everything [ perhaps that Israel is continuing to use Austrailian passports to carry out worldwide operations including assasinating nuclear sientists in other countries] Zygier is arrested shortly after and dies in prison by suiside even though there is four cameras on him 24 hours a day only one person is allowed contact with him a gaurd to bring him food 3 times a day. An Israel offical alledgedly says Zygier posed a extisensial threat to Israel. Isin't the truth that we will never know the truth because Israel will never release the truth.
8. Australia and other countries
LĂ©ocadie   (02.19.13)
should stop being so naive and trusting and go back to the old, more stringent rules about nationality and dual nationality - If Mr. Ziegler had lost his Australian citizenship as soon as he got a second one, he would not have been able to get all these passports and would probably be alive today.
9. Zygier
Edouard ,   Canada   (02.19.13)
We don't know anything for the moment Working or helping the Israeli intelligence is far more complicat than most people can thing, especially when an aly country is involve Everything is about perception ,it's a very touchy subject we will probably will never know the all story and this in accordance with Australia , israel, and many country's that are probably involve in this case
10.  'Sidney' Morning Herald? (sYdney)

11. What a mess....its not the end yet!!
Avouskila ,   South America   (02.19.13)
its partially the beguinning. The attitude of some Israel's institutions towards the Jews in diaspora, or closely assisting them, has always been one of owning their superior wisdom (I know what I am referring to, unfortunately). This 'self granted prerogative" has to be balance somehow with a proper respect in all venues. I know best, and don't you ever doubt that. Well it has never been one side take all, and in many cases participating innocent Jews have paid dearly: The 'Esek Bish; recall, and few others....please read the late Joe Golan Book: Dapim Myoman, what a big fashla that was in regard the whole Jewish community of Morocco in the 50's and the 60's.
12. this had nothing to do with passports
Cipora Julianna Kohn ,   Z   (02.19.13)
zygier obtained his passports perfectly legally. from what has come out in the press in israel, he committed acts of espionage against israel. whether he was bribed, we know not. nor do we know what sepcific espionage he committed. he was put in solitary to question him and at the same time to protect his network. people who join an intelligence service know that they assume risks. they also know that they are expected to sacrifice their lives for the country they serve if the need arises. eli cohen, a mythical hero, got caught when he became careless. he paid with his life.
13. Bad personnel choice & midhandling
rivkah f. ,   Jerusalem   (02.19.13)
It appears that Zygier was not suited for this type of Mossad work. How could anyone apply so frequently for a new passport under a false name four times? It would arouse anyone's suspicion. He probably broke down during interrogation by the Australians and could not stonewall as a hardened agent should have been able to do. He obviously told more than just confessing to using false identities & forged passports. Whoever chose him for this type of work bears part of the responsibility for the sad results.
14. Syrian, Iranian, Hezb ...terrorists...
(02.19.13)
most of the readers are displaying total ignorance regarding this case. what about the bestiality of those enemy leaders? the israeli institutions are on the defense. give me a break... suicide or murder? ...let us learn from the case.
15. My theory is very similar to yours #1.
Michael ,   Tel Aviv   (02.19.13)
It is possible that the security apparatus over-reacted to the threat caused by Zygier. In the end, it is a tragedy for everyone. An idealistic Zionist is dead; Israel's image has been blemished, and the security of the State has been compromised. In the end, this is a self-inflicted wound that need not have happened. There are a lot of mistakes, some systematic, that need fixing. I hope that action is taken and avoid hiding behind an excuse of "security, security, and security." Fix it!
16. Tell Australia to Stuff It
Bill Stein ,   USA   (02.19.13)
Australia use fake and foreign passports all the time in Australia's intelligence work tell them to stuff it. And expose their secrets
17. #6: Maybe but he was an Israeli Citizen too and BY CHOICE!
Dee Bee ,   Israel   (02.19.13)
No one forced him to immigrate to Israel and be an Oleh! He betrayed Israel and that's that! The Australian Government probably put him up to it and they are to blame! Israel protects ALL its citizens. Your Government apparently doesn't! You want answers? Ask YOUR Government!
18. Stating obvious ad hoc. Its assumption gathering. Not news
Adi ,   Zurich   (02.19.13)
Stating obvious ad hoc. Its assumption gathering. Not news
19. #16 "expose their secrets"
Robert ,   Australia   (02.19.13)
Why don't you do it as you have first hand knowledge of Australia's intelligence work?
20. #17 "Israel protects ALL its citizens"
Robert ,   Australia   (02.19.13)
I can name one it didn't.
21. From what is seems so far....
Mitchell Cohen ,   Gush Etzion, Israel   (02.19.13)
....at the most, Ben Zygier passed on information to an ALLY (i.e. Australia), NOT an enemy (and under intense questioning at that)....He certainly did not deserve to be locked up w/o basic human rights for this.... Of course, we will probably NEVER know....
22. #21 Allies???
Bill Stein ,   USA   (02.19.13)
He deserves exactly what he got even if they were so called allies but personally I would have exposed the fact he was caught and if true giving secrets. He could have been traded with Pollard. The information that was reported in the news told of methods against Iran and also names of other agents, Australia was not a friendly ally when they exposed this info
23. #22 Israel can't have it both ways.
Robert ,   Australia   (02.20.13)
The first transgression was against Australia by endangering her peoples. ASIO doing its duty by Australia is its first concern. I'm afraid Israel steps on ITS allies interests and expects consideration.
24. Asia doing duty to Australia
Zechariah   (02.21.13)
What will Australians Feel when Indonesia gets nuclear weapons from Iran and North Korea in Ten Years and then starts pressureing underpopulated Australia for Real,Estate .What If the USA is too embroiled elsewhere against Iran and South America.Australia
