It isn't important at all. It's just there. So are Greece and all those geographically significant former Soviet republics. If NATO were to pull its bases from Turkey (trust me; the Turkish demand that Patriot missile batteries deployed in Turkey not be used against Iran did not go over terribly well), Turkey will go bankrupt. It's halfway there already. And no one -- but NO ONE -- tells the United States how to employ its Patriot batteries. NO ONE. Least of all the turkeys in Turkey. Shipping is my bailiwick. Turkey's economy was dependent around 72 percent on its shipping and shipping-dependent industries. That's all gone. Turkey is suffering extremely high inflation, and troubling unemployment levels. It's only a matter of time, and that time is very, very short.

Despite all the discrimination and the pigeon against them the Sephardic Jews of the Ottoman Empire were very loyal to the empire so much that during the Balkan wars they openly stood with the Turkish resistance against Russian military. As a result thousands of Balkan Jews were masa cared by the Russians together with the Turks. As I said before Jews have been loyal peaceful subjects of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey. It is the Turks who did not show any gratitude to their Jewish community and Israel for all of the support they received during 1980 ies and 1990 ies.

Israel is thousands of year sold. True we were mostly exiled out of the Land for a long period of time, but Israel is the people, and we continued to exist. The Land OF the people called Israel is Kna'an, and we did regain sovereignty in that land in the 20th century. By secular, legalistic international law in 1948, but even there we back in the Land and building national institutions long before 1948. Turkish-Israel relations indeed existed long before then.
