1. Total propaganda... This story.
(02.28.13)
2. simple solution
Israeli grandma   (02.28.13)
Card can be pinned to inside coat pocket, therefore technically part of the garment. An old halachicly acceptable solution, hence the fact that we can "carry" our door key and handkerchief on shabat if we are very particular about detail.
3. Obviously the pious ones are exempt from carrying brains too
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.28.13)
4. More trouble from the Ultra Orthadox
Dovid ,   Haifa   (02.28.13)
Making trouble over there as well.
5. What's the issue? Carry an ID card, all other citizens must.
Shlomi   (02.28.13)
6. Leave it in your pocket before sundown on Friday & take it
Moshe ,   Usa   (02.28.13)
out after Shabat. Or, move to Israel.
7. time to put an aruv up all around the Netherlands!
what's the big deal ,   Israel   (02.28.13)
an aruv is a wire which creates a space fiction and allows orthodox Jews to carry on the Shabbat. We have it here in Israel and many cities abroad also have them.
8. carry anything but his clothing on the Jewish Sabbath.
split ,   US   (02.28.13)
Ask the rebbe to change it. They just changed the law that allowes the seculars to visit the observing Jews on Shabbat, didn't they ? ,... Obey the law of your host country or get the hell out ,...
9. IGNORANT HATERS
Isaac ,   Lakewood, NJ, USA   (02.28.13)
I am truly sickened to see all of the hateful comments out there on this topic. I am by no means ultra-orthodox but the level of ignorance out there is amazing. For the past 3000 years, Jews all over the world have kept the Sabbath which prohibits carrying anything outside in a public domain. "The Jew did not keep the Sabbath, the Sabbath is what kept the Jews". All of you who want Jews to change the laws dating back to Moses and the Ten Commandmants must realize that without the Sabbath there is no Judaism. They might as well have outlawed circumcision and ritual slaughter.
10. To #9 ,the Ignorant ignorant
Jon ,   USA   (02.28.13)
Look, what you believe is your prerogative. In Holland they have a law that affect EVERYBODY and also makes sense. So if for whatever reason you do not want to obey it, get the hell out.If you want to leave your brain at the entrance to the Sinaguge, it is your problem, not mine.
11. Get a clue...self induced problem, by the self chosen people
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (02.28.13)
12. #9 well done. you!
(03.01.13)
Yes, the sabbath is what has kept intact for 3000 years a group of people who refuse to carry ID cards on a particular day of the week. Well done you !
13. #9 "Dina d'Malkuta, Dina!"
Jew ,   Israel   (03.01.13)
from the Talmud meaning "The Law of the Land is the Law!" As the Israeli grandma said at #2 there is a halachically acceptable solution available so why not use it? I was just in Rome, there is no aruv there and as a guest in that city in order to go the the Rome Synagogue I needed to carry my passport with me. Before Shabbat, I created an inside packet in my coat and placed my passport in it BEFORE Shabbat and no problem I was able to KEEP the Shabbat and pass the security check at the synagogue. In other words I am going to suggest that before you come up and lecture all of us about being negative or self hating or making hateful comments....that you my friend get yourself educated (read the TANACH and the TALMUD) on the topic BEFORE passing judgment on other commentators. Wishing you all the very best and a Shabbat Shalom.
14. ID card
FEMALE ,   TA/AMSTERDAM   (03.01.13)
Every Dutch citizen from the age of 16 needs to have an ID card, what is the big deal...we have Separation of Religion & State, has nothing to do with your religion, your problem...religion you practice at home or in the Synagogue....
15. All Dutch citizens are subject to equal treatment
Berk ,   Amsterdam, Holland   (03.01.13)
I would feel discriminated if some people do not have to observe Dutch law.
16. the reason why police approached the man
timblanks ,   netherlands   (03.01.13)
Actually the ruling did say why the police approached the man. He was a suspect of domestic violence. http://zoeken.rechtspraak.nl/detailpage.aspx?ljn=BZ2283&u_ljn=BZ2283
17. Timblanks 16
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.01.13)
But he was NOT condemned for domestic violence [ niet bewezen , no proofs ]
18. #15 BERK
BEN JABO (MACHALL) ,   ISRAEL   (03.01.13)
I am willing to bet that more Jews are asked ot show their II.D. cards than Gentiiles or Muslimes .
19. #8 Split - When the Rabbi's need
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (03.01.13)
your advice, they'll ask for it, meanwhile shut up
20. #3 Tom - You're not pious
BENJ ABO (MACHAL ,   ISRAEL   (03.01.13)
what's your excuse for not having brains?
21. #19
shmulke ,   w coast USA   (03.02.13)
If it were muslims who had an issue with the laws of the state, neither 'split' the Jewbaiter or Stephen Benazi would have any problem defending them. But let Jews try to practice their religion and watch those two antisemites howl!
22. Holy are thou
Can   (03.02.13)
The Dutch are wiser because they will not give their land to foreigners to rule themselves - so give your God given land Gaza and West Bank to foreigners because you are too holy discriminating.
23. This man should be in jail
Michael ,   Haifa   (03.02.13)
If everybody broke the law, justifying that by a belief system, we would have total anarchy.
24. ID CARD
leon ,   montreal,Canada   (03.02.13)
YOU DOT WANT TO HAVE A ID CARD STAY HOME.
25. Holland
Debbie ,   Israel   (03.02.13)
I've lived in Israel for 35 years. I may have my head in a hole but I have never once read or heard that reilgious Jews can't carry anything on their clothing on Shabbat. And I consider myself knowledgeable and widely read.
26. If I were this guy....
Riva ,   Israel   (03.03.13)
I'd take it as a sign that it's time to LEAVE AND MOVE TO ISRAEL!
27. no. 23
Gabriel ,   Leiden, Netherlands   (03.03.13)
Thankfully, no one will go to jail for such a minor offence in this country. One of the talkbackers was generous in providing the complete ruling (in Dutch) and it would appear that this man knew that he was obligated to carry an ID card, and consciously chose to ignore this law, while being aware of the fact that he had halachic opportunities to circumvent it. It was just too much of a bother to sew his ID card in, is the bottom line, because he apparently changes coats very often.... This was his very defense. We, being the Dutch Jewish community, have more important things to worry about.
28. Sp.it - Let's be fair about it
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (03.04.13)
I.D. cards for Jews, DOG LICENSE PROMINANTELY DI0LAYED ON YOUR COLLAR

30. RE: Leave it in your... & take it
EZRA ,   FINLAND   (03.21.13)
