Back in the 1950's and 60's I recall mainstream Jewish papers using photos of girls only in engagement and wedding 'social notices'. Men considered it vain for men to be photographed!!! When a new generation published photos of the bride and the groom together we thought it very odd indeed! I would note that brides back then were fully covered in their photos, unlike the 'sleeveless and strapless' style of more recent times.

hey, no news today - no problem! let's bash the haredim, that sells. most haredi newspapers always avoid publishing women's faces. now, its not my style, but its a free country (or so i thought). it has nothing to do with the holocaust and ynet knows that. they have written this same article multiple times. clearly it sells (by eliciting hatred), so no need for a slow news day

unfortunately it is that very same "god" that is the cause of this (and every other) religious insanity. The only way to cure it is to educate from the cradle. Could someone kindly explain how a picture of Nazis herding their Jewish victims for deportation (and probable extermination) violates any biblical "Modesty Rule". Censoring this photo because the poor woman's hair is visible is an attempt to erase the facts of this tragedy...this is the ultimate insult to the memory of the victims. Shame on Bakehila's publishers!

It surprises me very much how mellow are Jewish women when it comes to oppose those abhorrent racists and chauvinists. Look at these replies, only seven are from discernible women. Why so few, why so gentle? Why are women not getting their anger out in large numbers? Why aren't Haredi and non-Haredi women uniting in opposition to this ages old discrimination?

There was no photography for this to be an "ancient tradition"!. This is the sin. Being perpetrated by the bible mongers who spend their lives staring into books without pictures while lusting in their mind. To be eager to dare deface those g-dly lost souls. That is the sin.

OK, I admit that perhaps I have over the years seen a few too many of the photos of the era. But still, it becomes a bit of an educational experience to look at them, as one can, to at least some degree vicariously experience the emotions of people on both sides of this. This censorship is essentially depriving the women of their voice, their ability to be "heard" by people of the future; and saying only men's expressions are worthy. What a bunch of macho chauvinist pigs, I feel utterly disgusted by this.

You do your own version of it, so don't lecture us. The "world", ha? I remember one prestigious news site which had only ONE article about Haifa being hit during the whole 2006Lebanon war and even that one had a photo showing some Lebanese village. There never was a picture showing the damage on the Israeli site. Contrary to this talkback, there was no comment protesting this fact. Makes me wonder why are you so proud of your "world".

The newspaper that censored this very well known photo is read by a fairly small population. If they need to "protect" their males from viewing female faces or clothing, that's their problem. What really infuriates me is the treatment of a little eight year old girl in Beit Shemesh while she was walking to school. Charedi men cursed her, spat at her, terrified her because they were more than mildly aware of what she was wearing. That event was horrifying. She was dressed modestly, but it was more important for these vile men that she be dressed in a style they approved of than her emotional health and sense of security. They were brutal and self righteous. If this is the Judaism charedim practice they can have it.

I have been grousing about the Beit Shemesh incident since the day it happened. Hareidi apologists say I "don't get it". Here's something: If they do this again to a small child, we should fight back using any means necessary. We're not going to let Israel be run by religious street gangs!
