I don't understand the man. If you write a book or you make a thesis in order to get a PhD or whatsoever it's not forbidden to use ideas or quotes from another book, study, thesis,…if, I repeat if, you cite the name of the author and the title of that book, study, thesis,….
Maybe, he's right. Maybe, it's the fault of that student,...but anyway it was his job to read and check everything himself.
I didn't read his book, but from the title I can guess that he also talks about religion (Torah,…), so I understand his shame because in the Pirkei Avot (chapter 6, nr.7), there is a quote: "…and repeating a saying in the name of the one who said it. For you have learned this: whoever repeats a thing in the name of the one who said it brings redemption to the world, as…".
In my time as student there was a scandal because students were going to people - graduate former students, lectores - to write their thesis. Maybe, here, it's something similar. I don't know. I hope not.
