Not only al-Assad and his Alawi-Baath regime fight for their survival, but also Nasrallah and Hezbollah. Hezbollah needs Syria for their weapon supplies from Iran, for their own safety and eventually for attacking Israel… They, together with Iran, will send or sent troops or militia members to help al-Assad. The latter has to stay in power. It's a must. After Turkey joined - under Erdogan - Egypt, Tunisia,… to be an important factor in the Middle East and in the Islamic and Muslim Brotherhood world it's for the Shiites too risky to use the Turkish smuggling routes, even the Kurdish territory will keep an eye shut only to harm Ankara. The Iraqi way is for sure still open, even from time to time the government controls planes coming from Iran to Syria. Don't forget the Iraqi Shiites there are in the majority. There are also the shipping routes, but passing by the Suez Canal is a risky business because Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) - the Syrian rebels mostly belong to that MB - control almost everything and everyone… and sailing around Africa, crossing the Mediterranean to go to Lattakia is asking the USA and his allies to stop them. I personally think that Iran is using Iraq and a part of the Kurdish territory between Iraq and Syria to supply Syria and Hezbollah with military help.
