1. Age of Retirement for Rabbis?
Joseph ,   London England   (04.18.13)
Rabbis have remained active over the age of 90 -- Rav Yoel Teitelbaum, Rav Moshe Feinstein, Rav Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, Rav Yosef Breuer, Rav Yakov Ruderman, Rav Yakov Kamenetzki, Rav Menachem Shach, Rav Shalom Yosef Elyashiv . . .
2. Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (04.18.13)
Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau is a world class figure, fluent in several languages, a diplomat and a living reminder of the Holocaust. He is probably acceptable to almost all Israelis, whether or not he is officially a 'Zionist'. Years back he was approached about becoming Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth, but wouldn't consider leaving Eretz Israel. That makes him a 'Zionist' to me!
3. Am I missing something?
S Judah ,   Jerusalem   (04.18.13)
All this talk about the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi. With the majority of Jews in Israel being Sephardim why all the focus on the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi.

Which group has greater control of the Government, finance and power in Israel? How many Sephardic PM's have there been?
6. how much does he want to grab?
Abe Isaacson   (04.19.13)
his nephew is better than him, his son is better than him. enough. he was twice the chief rabbi of TA & was the Israeli chief rabbi. By now he is well known to be fond of cash for officiating at wedding during his various tenures while he was being paid by the public turf! Enough is enough. Give a chance to the younger ones. We have had enough of his legends.
7. Rabbi Lau is like by every one
ma nishma ,   modiin   (04.19.13)
He is respected by all religious and political groups, known as a great speaker and talmud chacham. Who would be a better chief rabbi?
8. 7 you are not everyone! You clearly speak for yourself only
Cyberbrain ,   Israel   (04.19.13)
9. #6 Is right! Lau is no SPIRITUAL leader
Alfredo ,   Raanana   (04.19.13)
Rabbi Lau spoke in Raanana on his Holocaust experiences for about 1 1/2 hour, then walked of the podium refusing questions. Being also a Holocaust survivor I finally found him, and asked him :"Where was God during the Holocaust?" He contemptuously dismissed me. He is certainly no "spiritual leader" He is however immaculate dressed and later several people pointed out how much he charges for weddings ($5K+), has 3 salaries/pensions etc. We want a wise, wordly and truly pious person for chief rabbi, Lau is NOT!
10. Lau is PURE politician dressed as rabbi
Juan Hu Knos ,   Modiin   (04.19.13)

15. Chief Rabbi
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (04.21.13)
The office of chief rabbi was established to allow non Jewish rulers deal with their Jewish citizens. Perhaps it would be best to eliminate this function.
16. Reply to number 3.
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (04.21.13)
It looks like the Knesset will give Sephardi Chief Rabbi Amar another term of office. Therefore the focus is now on who will become Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi when Chief Rabbi Metzger completes his term.
