While many Jews did their best the State Dept closed the gates to America even when the quotas were not filled. When the UK agreed to take about 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi occupied Europe, the US Congress was asked to allow a similar number into the USA. The Senate said it was immoral to separate children from parents and therefore took no one, neither children nor their parents! Anti-Semitism was so rampant in the USA that American Jews were afraid to speak out. It took 400 Orthodox Rabbis to protest at Congress and the White House.
