Believe it or not the upside to this fanfare cavalcade is that it present to the world a sense of Israeli longevity, endurance and establishment. If you cannot tolerate any sort of fanfare when hungry people are hurting, please understand that to cancel such events and distribute the cost $$ would be socialism. In a democracy, the rich overspend, the middle class puts along and the lower class climbs. So Peres had his 90th birthday, let him celebrate and let Israel demonstrate longevity to the world. President Peres has dedicated his life to Hashem and in the establishment of the state of Israel. The dream for the prophesy is closer now than it's ever been. Still, many Israelis will obey and not buy whatever is covered on the shelves, and that's a coercion. Israelis with cars will drive to an Arab neighborhoods and freely buy products there without any covering, but that's an unnecessary compromise. Peres should not have signed this law when he was the PM, he should have vetoed it because it is an unjust and insane law. After our Katzav fiasco, celebrating our still functional President's 90th birthday seems something to celebrate. True the money could have been to better use - charity, etc. But how many times do Israeli's truly get to celebrate in such style ? I agree, some of it was a bit cheesy but that highlighted the better moments.

He has spent his whole life and devoted himself to the State of Israel ! In comparison, what have you unhappy TB'ers done to build the state ?
