31. Wait, but Thomas Friedman said this is a fight for Democracy
Aviva ,   Tel Aviv   (07.03.13)
Thomas Friedman and Roger Cohen of the NY Times have told us over and over again that what we're seeing across the Middle East is a revolution for Democracy. Apparently, the first Spring planted the wrong seeds. The best Egypt can hope for at this point is a benevolent dictator who can miraculously find the balance between traditional Islam and secularists. Uneducated, fanatically religious masses are great for demagogues but eventually come back to haunt them... and everyone else in their path.
32. failed state
Dik ,   Spijkenisse, Holland   (07.03.13)
it is clear that Islam in Egypt is preventing progress and democracy for the huge population. Let Egypt look at neighbour Israel how prosperity can be reached. And by working together a bright future is on the horizon. Shalom from Hollnd
33. Some states need to fail....
Shachar ,   Eilat   (07.03.13)
States, like individuals, fail for a reason. Many of them need to hit rock bottom before they take a look at themselves and decide to change their ways. They need to tackle their failures alone. When they are on the path back up then a helping hand can be useful. Greece for example should never have been bailed out. It should have been kicked out of the EU and left to fend for itself. It would serve as an excellent warning to other countries and Greece itself would recover faster. Egypt needs to be left to fail and pick itself up, in the long run it will be much healthier.
34. #30 no comparison
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.03.13)
Syria, Iraq ad Lebanon are countries that are rich enough in natural resources that they can survive. They will ethnically cleanse each other until they run out of weapons (hear that Obama?) and each group has clear defensible borders around a homogenous territory. All the while, they will grow food. This is how history works for the past 6000 years. Egypt is different. Their problem is that they have no food and they can't grow food. Nothing can save them unless they can seize territory from Libya (for oil), Ethiopia or Israel. A comment: this wasn't inevitable, it is all thanks to Jimmy Carter and Hosni Mubarak.

38. Why should the world prop up an Islamist regime?
Johnny ,   TA, Israel   (07.03.13)
The goal of the Muslim brotherhood is World wide domination of Islam and destruction of the West. Why should the West aid those who wish to destroy them?
39. Egypt already is a failed state and should be colonized
Berk ,   Amsterdam   (07.03.13)
again by a western state.
40. #37 I'd be happy
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (07.03.13)
I'd be happy to explan what I meant, but I did not understand your question. But I want to be very clear: I am not happy of what will happen to Egypt, it is all thanks to Carter, Mubarak and Obama.

I agree that limited food resources is a big problem for Egypt. But small countries like Singapore (or Israel) or bigger ones like Japan have prospered in spite of small cultivated area, no natural resources (oïl & metals). They found other means to finance the necessary imports of goods they can't produce. If Egypt can limit the birth rate & succeeds in reorienting its economy it may be able over the longer term to overcome its current predicament.. On the other hand the colonial creations of France & Britain such as Syria, Irak & Lebanon have low probability of survival unless split in smaller parts along religious & ethnic origin. And if this happens, these small entities run the risk of getting absorbed by their bigger neighbours such as Iran, Jordan.
43. 30 Alan.You are wrong,Egypt's history
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (07.03.13)
has stoped with the Muslim invasion of Egypt in the 7th century,Egypt used to be the bread basket of the middle east,(Remember,Jacob sends his sons to Egypt for bread) today,Egypt is a basket case, living on donations and extortion, but things are not so bad,the average Egyptian doesn't need much,a little bread and a lot quranic opium, when the Egyptian gets intoxicated with religios opium ,he is happy and doesn't need anything else.

49. egypt must solve its own problems
zionist forever   (07.05.13)
Egypt has plenty of assets its just not using them properly and, huge inland natural gas reserves but since Mubarak left they keep blowing up the pipeline. Each ship that uses the Suez Canal pays about $1 million a day Egypt has assets so they need to learn to use them properly. When it comes to unemployment their biggest problem we are in a world where skills are more important than ever so its harder for the unskilled to get jobs and the bigger your population the more of a problem it becomes. As for government we need to leave them to choose what they want. Dictator, civilian or religious government must leave them to decide what they want through trial and error. Same with Syria, in time Assad will fall and the west must not try manipulate the way things go from there. If they want to fight each other let them, if they end up with another dictator leave them just need to stay impartial. Alsso cannot go around bailing every country with economic problems its a loosing battle. Instead teach them how to make use of the assets they do have, can't promise to make them rich but ate least we are not creating nations of beggars. Time to tell the whole arab world get off your high horses and work and if you sink or swim its your choice.
