The responsible editor is Franziska Augstein, sister of Jakob Augstein, both well-known crackpots in German journalism, the latter wrote anti-Semitic remarks as well - it's in the family. According to the Jewish newspaper "Jüdische Allgemeine" the caricature was taken out of the archive and wasn't drawn in any context with Jews or Israel. The cartoon was originally published in a cooking magazine.

Interestingly, the Süddeutsche Zeitung didn't dare publishing ONE SINGLE Mohammad cartoon. So much about "freedom of speech". But the analogy with the Mohammad cartoons is a wrong one, anyway: 1. Muslims ARE suspiciously frequently involved in acts of violence. On the other hand, Judaism, with its prohibition of a human sacrifice, is the DIRECT OPPOSITE of a Moloch. 2. The "Jewish Moloch" cartoon recycles centuries-old antisemitic clichees. Millions of Jews have been tortured and killed because of them.
