it is perfectly clear that high-ranking officials in the obama administration approved this "leak", and made very sure that their trained seals in the media broadcast it far and wide. since the most likely outcome is some sort of clash between israel and the syrian regime and/or russia, it begs the question of why washington would want to exacerbate the conflict. the least evil explanation is that they're prepared to drag israel into the syrian civil war, just to help overthrow assad. "with friends like this, who needs enemies?"
