Devorah   (08.13.13)
Frankenfood, fish farms, GMOs, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, trans-fats, preservatives, heavy metals, etc., and it's making people and animals sick. Our bodies were not designed to process the above garbage.

12. it cost about $250,000 to make so it must be kosher
zionist forever   (08.13.13)
Kosher food is traditionally more expensive than non kosher so if a burger cost $250,000 I would be amazed if it wasn't kosher

14. You're On To Something, Devorah(#6)!
emanon ,   USA   (08.13.13)
I' do not have an intrinsic problem with "fish farms", but I don;t know if I would eat an animal product grown in the lab. For me, it is not a question of Kosher, I just do not want any Frankenfood in my food chain! BTW, the only source for stem cells, ultimately, is an animal, so for dietary purposes, shouldn't this lab grown beef still be considered as coming from a cow?
15. Tom # 3 I am surprised
Sagi   (08.13.13)
at the contempt you show for such a profound problem. The profundity of the question is compounded by the intricacy of the questions which have to be addressed. Was the female progenitor of the stem cell in herself kosher. Did she cohabit with the male progenitor during her menstrual period. Did she visit the ritual bath. Was the test tube circumcised. If so was it done by a registered Purveyor of that profession. Without knowing the exact answers to these questions it would not be possible to issue a certificate of kashrut. Last but not least, was the appropriate fee paid.
16. Sagi, every male born to them is a circumcised test tube.

Devorah   (08.13.13)
It would seem to me that lab-grown beef would be considered as coming from a cow because where else are the stem cells coming from? Google the hazards of fish farming, and you will never eat another farm-raised fish again. Animals are not the only source of stem cells. Plants have them, too, and they are used primarily in the cosmetics industry.

Are you sure that you don't like antibiotics? Get a massive infection and see how far you get without them. People died frequently of what seemed like insignificant things in the days before penicillin.

22. #20 - iselin
Devorah   (08.14.13)
I don't think you understand why I included antibiotics. In the U.S., for example, farm animals are shot up with enormous doses of antibiotics, and those drugs end up in the systems of consumers. Here is something from the Environmental Working Group (an excellent organization) to help you understand. I hope Ynet gives it the ok because it is critical that people know what they are eating: Click here: Meat and Antibiotics - 2013 Meat Eaters Guide | Meat Eater's Guide to Climate Change + Health | Environmental Work

Thank you for posting my last comment. I very much appreciate it.

iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (08.14.13)
OK, so you were specific, not general in your panning of antibiotics. No, they should not be used in the food industry at all. I also never eat farmed salmon, which is the cheapest food you can buy in Norway. It tastes like sweaty coins smell, metallic and awful.
25. No, stop...seriously
Jeremy ,   Miami, USA   (08.14.13)
Seriously people, it's not a funny article or intriguing question. I'm no biblical scholar and I don't keep kosher but I'm telling you anybody who thinks test tube food could be kosher is missing a big point here. Being Kosher in some ways boils down to taking care of and respecting your body, what we consume, life and the world we live in. This is not kosher and concerns me anybody would even ask.
26. Limitless God

That's where Christiandom ahead because with God all things are possible by transforming of minds and attitudes and respect of human rights - heaven is limit of christiandom as they solved world hunger in test tubes Amen.
27. insane superstition
nadav ,   tlv   (08.15.13)
"was conjured up by rabbis studying a mystic text"- really? How can anyone with a rudimentary 21 century education believe this medieval superstitious tomfoolery? I don't understand how anyone can be orthodox. they must be intellectually dishonest, with their heads in the sand.
28. Why Not Meat?
Christy ,   Boston, US   (08.16.13)
If stem cells from a cow are used to grow this substance - why wouldn't it be considered some form of meat? The origin would be a cow. Why isn't the product considered to be from a cow and therefore meat?
