1. NYT - US unprepared so it must be Israels fault..
Jrebecca ,   Modiin   (08.17.13)
Yes the US was unprepared. When they have a leader who does not want to see or hear, what do they expect. Yes, Israel is in close ties with al-Sisi, as they were with Morsy. It's our safety, we work on it. Not even Egypt would be stupid enough to believe Obama would listen to Israel about US money. Only the NYT.
2. cancelling aid to egypt would be a mistake
CJK   (08.18.13)
the amateurs running the us government just cannot help themselves. they are making enemies all over the world. the strategic relationship with egypt which was built up over decades by numerous presidents is being endangered by this crew of incompetents.
3. Authorized Outsourcing?
Mark of Lewiston ,   USA   (08.18.13)
So the Government of Egypt now speaks for a divided US government. Wonder who outsourced the authority. Will the Government of Israel allow the US public in on what other functions of our government it now runs? Does the Defense Department now report to Netanyahu and CIA report to Mossad? Or was the recent visit by Chairman Dempsey a retention interview? Is Dempsey being fired so the US military will be more directly controlled?

CJK   (08.18.13)
if the us government is divided, it is so because the president and his clueless crew of incompetents cannot see that the muslim brotherhood is a totalitarian theocratic group, unqualified to lead a country. were obama even slightly less narcissistic and more worldly, he would have listened to warnings from us allies about this group, rather than listen to his own inner yearnings of an islamist democracy.

6. Saudi Genorosity 15 Billion
Zechariah   (08.18.13)
The Saudi can in jump aid Egypt Fifteen Billion for arms and food but for the Palestinian Refugees over sixty five years not so forthcoming. The Palestinian Refugee crises was due to rejection of The 1937 And 1947 Partition Plans creating the current Viscious Cycles becoming worse daily. All over five thousand square miles of land and even with an Internarionalized Jerusalem.

First sentence apparently should read Israel instead of Egypt. Is this an outright coup?
8. #3, you're joking, right?
the mad zionist ,   san francisco   (08.18.13)
do you really believe the NYT?. and do you really believe Egypt would listen to Israel? who is hated more then the Egyptian Seculars by the Obama administration. the Israelis do dumb things all the time,,this is not one of those dumb things. I just can't believe suckers haven't come to realize that when embarrassing things happen to the Obama administration in the middle east, suddenly the new York Times has a report tying it to Israel somehow. and it's usually the same journalists that report it like Goldberg and Thomas that have a direct line to the white house. it just amazes how naive some people are when anything negative is being said about Israel, it is believed without checking the source.
9. 4/8 - Cipora and Madman
Mark of Lewiston ,   USA   (08.18.13)
Congress is divided at least as far as anybody in Congress cares at all. The Republicans and the Democrats are about split. If a vote were held today in the US House, aid would be cut off Benhorin here and Ravid at Haaretz, both report Israeli diplomats making promises about the US aid. Who authorized Israeli diplomats to promise US actions, especially US Congressional actions?
10. 9, Mark, "diplomatic sources"
CJK   (08.18.13)
diplomatic sources could be the white house, the state department, the sink hole, or al-sisi's people. what is significant is that "the white house was unprepared for what is happening in egypt." that means that the us intelligence community is functioning subpar. israel cannot know what the us will do unless someone in the us administration, such as unnamed "diplomatic sources" tell israel what will go down. what is absolutely certain is that cutting aid to egypt is against us national interests. the russians and the chinese are waiting in the wings. the us would lose hugely if it jeopardises its relations with egypt.
11. "they believed they were close to achieving a political
oops!   (08.18.13)
agreement". That is precisely the problem with the Americans; they do not know or understand the region.
12. humpty dumpty
dani ,   dc   (08.18.13)
this is the results of a disastrous US foreign policy that began with inaction following the iranian uprising in 2008 and which has continued to neglect its own self interests with compete abandon. the us relationship with turkey, egypt, the gulf and saudi arabia is in tatters, while the iranians, russians and hezbollah are coordinating tightly. this is what happens when a "community organizer" becomes a president. now the obama administration is sitting over the pieces of its policy that has fallen apart completely and trying to imagine how to put it together again. there has been perhaps not one good move in the past 6 years, with exception of lucky strike with bin laden. everything else has been a shot in the foot.
13. Waste of money
olavi ,   espoo, finland   (08.18.13)
It is useless to throw american taxpayers money to Egypt. In a few year USA do not need oil from those bastards in Middle East so they may solve their problems with each others.
14. Old Paradigm, Cipora.
Mark of Lewiston ,   USA   (08.18.13)
US Law REQUIRES aid be cut in the event of a coup. The US public and Congress, House and Senate are split three ways. The US now is entirely independent for energy - could walk from the entire region, tomorrow if it chose. Probably won't, but could. Your calculus is outdated Energy independence and isolationism are on the rise in the US. Those are facts on the ground inside the US. Ideology may be trumped by that new reality. Favors will be favors, not done out of need.

us still needs the suez canal and over flight rights. you, like obama, have a real problem understanding international affairs or strategy. on the other hand, it might be pure malice. in any case, the russians and/or the chinese would be thrilled to take over the entire middle east. Israel will ally according to her own national security needs. the russians treat their allies better than the americans, especially under obama. so think about it, habibi.

Then why did the United States NOT cut off aid to Egypt when Mubarak was overthrown? Wasn't that a coup? Would you like me to recount all the instances in which the United States did not cut off aid to countries following a coup? Do you really wish to be embarrassed that badly?
17. dog and pony show put on for the public
bernard ross   (08.19.13)
obama gave sisi the green light and knew what was coming. It was agreed that he would distance himself and the GCC would fund in the interim. Obamas show is for his us market and world diplomacy. He is with the GCC, it is BS.
