1. Great idea, but only in theory
Kate ,   Israel/US   (09.15.13)
There is nothing healthy about GMO's. Nothing. Little boys are experiencing severe hormonal imbalances and growing breasts from being fed genetically modified soy. Millions are also suffering from inflammation and allergies that eventually lead to cancers and other autoimmune diseases. This may be a 'cure' for famine but it will be the cause of severe ailments in the future. Not a real solution.
2. We've brought solution to Paganism:look what it brought us!
tom ,   tel aviv   (09.15.13)
I wouldn't bother trying to solve "world's" problems. That's what they have the Imaginary Friend for, not so?
3. #1 Wrong
EGGM ,   Petah Tikva, Israel   (09.15.13)
There might be some problematic GM foods in the world, but there's nothing inherently unhealthy about the practice. Most of the food you eat today in the West is genetically modified in one form or another, and this practice is becoming more and more standard around the world. Some modification increase plant longevity, some increase the nutritional value, shelf life, etc. All of these things are good for you. If there are serious problems with specific modifications, they should be discarded immediately, but this shouldn't doom us to using farming technology from Ancient Mesopotamia.
4. #1 may be not
deavman ,   Acco, Israel   (09.15.13)
The article does not say that the plants were gmo, may be it has been obtained through selective breeding which is not gmo. Even if it is gmo, it is not automatically detrimental to health...and then again, you go tell those starving Africans that gmo is not healthy for them.
5. #1 is correct
M   (09.15.13)
Do your research people, there are several documentaries available. There are no GMOs that are healthy in any shape or form. It is organisms that have mutated DNA that in turn mutate human DNA, causing birth defects amongst other things that commentator at #1 listed. When kids will be born with defective genitalia or with other problems, Israel will be blamed for it.
6. I think you meant drought!
Veronique ,   Israel   (09.15.13)
Draught is air intruding into an enclosed space. Drought is not enough ater.... Otherwise it does not make sense. About GMOs- sojy beans included hormones similar to femaile hormones long before they were GMOs. GMOs prevent the spraying of much more insecticide when the plant itself include a repellent for insects. So it is not bad at all.
7. To 5
(09.15.13)
I agree- regardless of the moral ethics of genetically engineered products, should something go wrong with this experiment, Israel will certainly be blamed.
8. Great discovery
Zechariah   (09.15.13)
It's a great discovery and reinforces the great innovative discoveries of the Jewish State Derived in a Secular form from Talmudic scholarship Self restraint and wish to do Good Deeds .After all weren't the Jews given the Knowledge of the Ten Commandments and other Life Improving Ideas .Plus a real Defense against asteroids and alien invasions centuries forth.
9. Pride
Joe Mevorah ,   Lincoln, USA   (09.16.13)
Congratulations to the scientists who could some day solve an over crowded planet survive. Imagine what other discoveries Israeli scientists can accomplish for the human race if there was peace in the Middle East. The entire planet would benefit.
10. Why stop there, why not GM Israelis to help save water?
Ken   (09.16.13)
11. #5/7:you are funny, really. Just proves my point. But I was
tom ,   tel aviv   (09.16.13)
(kind of) joking, you on the other hand seem to be serious about your "we'll be blamed for it"-complex!
12. Opuntia
David ,   New England   (10.05.13)
Opuntias can be eaten and survive well without water. They are used as fodder in a number of countries.
13. technology
dkatbena ,   Makati Philippines   (10.11.13)
