1. Let us recount Rabin's vision, for those who keep uttering
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (09.22.13)
his name, as he expressed it in his last speech at the Knesset on 5 Oct. 1995: 1. Jerusalem will remain united under Israel's sovereignty and will also include the suburbs of Giv'at Zeev and Ma'aleh Adumim, including E1. 2. All major Jewish settlement blocs will be incorporated into Israel's sovereign territory, including Gush Qatif in Gaza. 3. The Jordan Valley ought to be viewed in the widest sense of the term, and it too will remain under Israel's rule. 4. The future Palestinian Arab state will not be a regular state in that it will be totally demilitarized, its airspace will be full controlled by Israel, as will its boundaries and all of its border passes: land, sea and air. This was a vision grounded in reality and pragmatism: the creation of an autonomous Arab entity west of the Jordan River in addition to the 77% of Palestine handed over to the Arabs in 1921, located between the Jordan River and the Arabian desert.
2. What matters is not to make the same stupid mistakes
Sam ,   Canada   (09.22.13)
Whether Yom Kippur or Oslo what's important is not to repeat the same dumb mistakes. What brings harm to the country is extremism and naivete. The Left and Right should avoid both.
3. Very insightful article.
Mike ,   Nyc USA   (09.22.13)
For me, the comparison between the failures of 1973 and Oslo was interesting.
4. Leftism is a severe mental disease
Chaim schonbrun ,   Brooklyn ny   (09.22.13)
Therefore you cannot expect a severely mentally retarded persons to realize and admit he made a mistake. The real question is,why would the Israeli people keep on electing these suicidal mentally diseased leftist traitors? And this includes the present government
5. #4:While you're right as to the clinical description of all
tom ,   tel aviv   (09.22.13)
things "leftist", you're wrong as to us electing them into our government: we keep on voting RIGHT, but are getting (it seems) RIGHTIST IDIOTS who are doing Left's bidding....I have no explanation whatsoever for Israeli post-Oslo behaviour.
6. @4 read 5; @5 correct!
(09.22.13)
7. To #5 Tom
Chaim schonbrun ,   Brooklyn ny   (09.22.13)
Please Tom,don't tell me you did not know that BIbi is a leftist coward, who was the one who signed away Chevron? Who was the one who tolerated thousands of rockets from garza without lifting a finger, who was the criminally insane gangster who agreed to release a thousand murderous terrorist swines, who's hands are dripping with Jewish blood?
8. Surrender started in 1982; Oslo was in the cards
Philippe ,   Raanana   (09.22.13)
When Begin let Arafat flee from Beyrouth in 1982 and bowed to international pressures after Sabra-Shatila, the cast was set for the ongoing assault on Israel. The moral weakness that followed - clearly engineered inside Israel by shalom akhshav- gave a moral edge to the PLO and they engineered the 1st intifada. Then Shamir loast elections to the left in 1992 ( thanks to massive US pressure ) and the super-idiots Rabin-Peres accepted a very naive and lousy bet.Since then the worls is pushing us down the road and we are driven by hostile pressure from our very good friend the US and our contmeptuous friend the european union. The national patriotic israeli ethos has been debased and replaced by an opportunistic " post-zionism " lower your pants social comedy.Bibi-Barak-Sharon-Olmert-Bibi- it's all the same, the country has been " pussyfied ".
9. They will never admit their mistake
Rivkah F. ,   Jerusalem   (09.22.13)
Segal is correct but the Oslo crew will never admit it was wrong and will always blame the Israeli public whom they view as their inferiors. Even if they do not publicly admit the error of trusting Arafat & all that it entails, they should at least have the humility & sense to be silent. But Savir, Beilin, Peres, Oz and the rest of them never tire of saying that Oslo would have worked if only Israelis wouldn't have spoiled things and they never blame the Palestinians or their own bad judgement. And most of the media bear a great deal of responsibility for their unquestioning support of the Oslo misadventure.
10. The author of this article is sick
Stan ,   Israel   (09.22.13)
33 years ago Segal was part of a Jewish terrorist organisation which killed Palestinians, and planned to blow up the mosques on the Temple Mt. He proves that he still has twisted ideas by comparing the 1973 war with the Oslo Accords. Apparently he also has no understanding of physics. The occupation is like a sealed container of water, if you heat it enough and there is no safety valve, eventually it will explode. Segal convenienly ignores the First Intifada which came at a time of relative prosperity for the Pals. ( Over 100,000 working in Israel and seemingly happy.) I believe that the Second Intifada occurred because on the Arab side there are people like Segal. The extremists on both sides want all the land between the River Jordan and the sea.
11. traitors galore in israel's left and right
martin ,   uk   (09.22.13)
when will the truth be out regarding the israel hating communist oslo clique and their collaboratorsin israel? were the israelis just naive, ignorant of whom they were dealing with in oslo? in any case, why were the israeli communist collaborators in this fiasco that caused thousands of israeli victims of peace never tried for treason?
12. # 8
Stan ,   Israel   (09.23.13)
Can you explain why Hawks become Doves when they are in a position of responsibility? Ezer Weitzman Arik Sharon Ehud Olmert Tzippi Livni and maybe Bibi Netanyahu
13. To #8 Surrender started not in 1982
Doctor ,   US   (09.23.13)
but much earlier. In 1979 when Begin gave up Sinai to Sadat. Even earlier in 1973 when staying just few hundred miles from Cairo and Damascus Israel did not finish its job and did not destroyed those rat's nests. Even earlier in 1967 when after 6-days war Israel did not annex Judea and Samaria
14. # 8 Strong nationalistic leaders
Stan ,   Israel   (09.23.13)
of the kind you are looking for.Achmadinijad, Hugo Chaves, Sadam Hussein, the Argentinian Junta (who for all their militarism could not gain control of the Falklands) Franco, Stalin, Mussolini and his friend from Germany. I remind you that Ben Gurion was forced by America and USSR to return Sinai to Egypt and Shamir was forced to go to Madrid and make concessions. So you see my friend that the policy "If you don't succeed with force use more force" is not the solution in our political situation. Sharon failed to stop the 2nd Intifada even when he destroyed the Mukata where Arafat became a prisoner , and killed thousands of Pals. In the end Avi Dichter had no choice and recommended building the security barrier. {which I and others demanded 2 years earlier)
15. Ridiculous and irrelevant comparison
Shachar ,   Eilat   (09.23.13)
You know the right wing are struggling to explain themselves when they try to compare the 1993 Oslo accords to the 1973 Yom Kippur War. More Segal silliness. What really bothers him is the stunning success of Oslo. For 20 years extremists on both sides have been trying to destroy Oslo....and have failed!
16. #14 Not true
Logic ,   Israel   (09.23.13)
Sharon stopped the 2nd intifada by building the wall and by embarking upon Operation Defensive Shield after the Passover bombing. Beforehand, he followed a policy called "silence as strength" after the Dolphinarium attack which utterly collapsed vis a vis the Palestinian policy of Israeli blood on the streets. In regards to the wall, it should have been built in 1993 at the time of the Oslo Accords as a mitigator against failure. The author is very correct in his idea that both the Yom Kippur War and the Oslo Accords were policies based on overconfidence and groupthink. It was Labor's Shahal and Ramon who originally proposed it, so yes, both the Left who wanted to run fast with the Oslo appeasement process and the Right who didn't want to defacto divide the land who are to blame for that lack of foresight.
17. #15 No, he is correct
Logic ,   Israel   (09.23.13)
The Israeli leadership promised not only non-belligerency, which we didn't get, but a messianic peace. Expectations were raised sky high and failure was not even considered seriously in Oslo, just like the thought that the Egyptians would never attack in 1973 because Israel was so strong. Therefore, there is a strong case to be made that the Israeli leadership of both 1973 and 1993 suffered from groupthink, wishful thinking and overconfidence. This is dangerous for a country such as Israel to make such big mistakes with such little room for error.
18. oslo was forced upon rabin
arne ,   chicago usa   (09.23.13)
by Clinton. it seems not one word has been mentioned to that effect. rabin was never a strong leader, before the 67 war he had a panic attack and it took a few days to straighten him out.as for peres hes allways been the guy looking over someones shoulder.after all is said and done it was CLINTON who put oslo on Israel.
19. you want the truth about oslo?
martin ,   uk   (09.23.13)
investigate and research all the deviant communist norwegians involved in the oslo accords. only then, you will understand why the accord was set up to fail in the first place. the ;plo/pa have never complied with even one item of the accords. everything in the accords was to satisfy the arabs and their norwegian supporters, all of whom want to see israel eradicated to be replaced by palestine in its entirety. it is ludicrous to even believe that oslo could or would succeed. how stupid, how evil and how naive to believe isarel would be stronger. incidentally it was bush who brought up the whole palestine scenario to its dangerous level. carter, cklinton, the whole rotten lot of them depend upon the arab black liquid gold
20. Key thing is to bring Oslo criminals to justice.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.24.13)
Oslo directly resulted in more than 1,500 murdered Israelis and more than 14,000 maimed. It was an abomination which from Israel still suffers. The key thing is to bring Oslo criminals to justice. The victims and their families deserve no less.
21. # 11, # 19 Martin
Stan ,   Israel   (09.24.13)
Wow! You do have a problem, communists hiding behind every tree and bush. Have you tried a psychiatrist?
22. #20 No, Chaim
Logic ,   Israel   (09.24.13)
Running the country incompetently is not illegal. The people in a democracy get the leaders they vote for. In regards to Oslo, you must ask yourself why it continued to exist between 1996-1999 when Labor was out of power. Finally, one could take your idea and apply it to the 1982 Lebanon invasion debacle as well. Whether that was a necessary war or an optional adventure is debated to this day.
23. #16 Check again.
Stan ,   Israel   (09.24.13)
Operation Defensive Shield was carried out from 29th March 2002 until 3rd May 2002 . As I wrote, the decision to build the security barrier came later when it became clear that the terror attacks did not stop. The government decided in June to build the barrier. It was seen that as sections were built security improved. ( See article by Col. (res.) Danny Tirtza)
24. stan
martin ,   uk   (09.24.13)
I only have a problem when people are unable to ascertain facts. what is the differecne between a leftwing extremist and a communist? you need to check the background of the norwegians behind oslo as i suggested. you obviously have not. those youngsters killed by a.b.breivik on utoye were being brainwashed by extremist left wingers. the head of fatah was an invited guest there. any israel hating guest is allowed in. any pro israeli is not allowed to talk publicly in norway. try the respected blog norway israel and the jews. you will learn something of the norwegian mentality
25. #22. Oslo was criminal negligence.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.24.13)
#22. As you note, politicians can't be held criminally liable for incompetence. However, there is a difference between incompetence and criminal negligence. Lunatic acts such as freeing and arming terrorists are beyond incompetence. These are criminal acts and would be recognized as such throughout the Western World. Those who inflicted Oslo on Israel should be prosecuted for criminal negligence.
26. # 24 Martin, see a phychiatrist
Stan ,   Israel   (09.25.13)
The Israelis who negotiated in Oslo were most certainly not "communist collaborators" as you describe them. in #11. Also ...."thousands of Israeli VICTIMS OF PEACE" as you describe them died because of the occupation and arrogance. Moshe Dayan said that he "prefered having Sharm el Sheik without peace to having peace without Sharm el Sheik" so he and Golda Meir did not accept Sadat's peace proposals in 1971. After more than 2500 Israeli soldiers died in the 1973 war because of this arrogance, Menachem Begin, with Dayan as his foreign minister made the same deal with Sadat.
27. #26 Stan, why argue with someone about
On the Balcony ,   Akko/NY/Kyiv   (09.26.13)
facts when you think that person needs a psychiatrist precisely because they appear incapable of discerning between fact and fantasy? In any case, Oslo is on its way to becoming a footnote. Let the beasts howl and wait for the fat men to sing.
