Although I am a Shachnik Litvish Yid, I have seen over the decades how much Rav Ovadia ztl restored the Crown of Torah to Sefardi Yidden by building a Sefardi school system and a Sefardi political party in Israel. He even restored Ethiopian Jewry to the Jewish nation. Rav Ovadia supported 'Land for Peace' and was even prepared to compromise over control of Jerusalem to promote peace. Unfortunately the more Land we gave the less Peace we saw. He reached out to a far wider range of Israelis than his Litvish and Chasidish counterparts, bringing less religious Sefardim under the Wings of the Shechina. May his memory be for a blessing.

May he rest in peace. Great is as great does. He did very little that is great. Unfortunately in his dotage he did some ill and said some terrible things. He will answer to G-d for them. Let us wish him eternal peace.

religion shoulkd NEVER mix with politics. REligious doctrine, especially Islam, Evangelical Christianity and Islam are totalitarian belief systems that require the control of habits and thoughts of individuals as well as communities (and nations). Rabbi Yosef may half been a scholar, but he should NOT have dirtied himself by getting involved with a divisive, racist, and opportunities political party like Shas. Because he did, we were unfortunate enough to hear his racist rantings against fellow Jews- even those who are Orthodox, but not of Shas' ilk. Israel should separate religion from state and bar all political parties based on race, religion, language, ethnicity and place of birth!
