1. Democracy or Permanent Socialist Legacy
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (10.20.13)
The Supreme Court has overdone its intervention in political issues over riding the will of the Nation in Knesset Time to reign in unfettered powers of a less than perfect Court
2. A country that doesn't separate powers is NOT a democracy!
(10.20.13)
Separation of powers is the solely garant for justice!
3. The anti-democractic israeli Left is running scared
Arie ,   Haifa   (10.20.13)
Its hegemony over the court is being challenged, It fears Israel might actually become democratic, which would end leftist hegemony over the courts.
4. Democracy
Abraham Nachmias ,   Petach Tikva IL   (10.20.13)
It is very interesting how the concept of what democracy is changes depending on the political needs of some people. It is well known all over the world that democracy has 2 powers (Knesset and Supreme Court) in order to balance things. When one has the right to over rule the other then it's not democracy but an uncontrolled Knesset or an elitist government by people who don't represent the real power (that's to say, the majority of the citizens of a country) Simply in the Israeli case the Supreme Court is the last bastion of power of the old Stalinist regime that founded the state. When judges do politics they are not doing their work but trying to impose their views against the will of the people!
5. #1 - #2 is right; don't take from flawed Supreme Court
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (10.20.13)
and give it to even more flawed, Haredi-Kingmakers of the Knesset It's no secret that this is a naked play to crown Haredim as rulers
6. Good for the Right ! Keep going and
DT ,   TA Israel   (10.20.13)
don't stop there.
7. About Bloody Time ! It will never happen, though.
YIsrael of Jerusalem ,   Jerusalem , ISRAEL   (10.20.13)
We have the most powerful, the most interventionist, the most incestuous Supreme Court of any democracy, by far ! The bleating of those opposed to any change to bring our Court in line with other democracies is to be expected; after all, they have counted on it to oppose policies favoured by the people of Israel through its representatives. Opposition by the media, the intellectuals, and the Leftists of all stripes will kill this initiative, as they have all others. Bibi certainly does not have the baytzim to back this, as Sara took them away years ago.
8. Chazak ChazakV'NitChazek !!
GF ,   Jerusalem   (10.20.13)
Shaked and Levin, don't give up a very worthy fight. Chazak ChazakV'NitChazek !!
9. The high court ant- democratic.
Michael Pielet ,   Israel   (10.20.13)
Democracy is a code word for a high court that self perpetuates a leftist anti zionist orientation by a selection process that allows the members of the court to pick their own successors. This is the way one sector of the Israel public, the leftist, anti-zionist, anti-religious public is able to foist its world view on the Israeli electorate. The court does not fairly represent all sectors of Israeli society. The court is anti-democratic and only represent the view of a small segment of israeli society. tsipi likes the current court because it represents her ant-zionist, anti religious viewpoint.
10.  High Court is a leftist no democratic rotten system
(10.20.13)
11. High Court protects Arabs not Jews
(10.20.13)
12. What the term "democracy" means:
Jules   (10.20.13)
Translated from Greek, that word means "power of the people". Which means that the branches of power that were not appointed by the people, have a dubious legitimacy. The Knesset IS elected by the people, whereas the Supreme Court is not. So the leftists' propaganda about "democracy in danger" is just plain demagoguery: in fact the rightists want to RESTORE the democracy, by making the Supreme Court responsible for its actions and decisions.
13. Why the Right?
(10.20.13)
Livni & Yachimovitch despise the very fundamentals of democracy according to Montesquieu, the cornerstone of which is the independence of powers. The permanent infringements of the Supreme Court into Knesset's decisions deeply harm democracy and show the contempt of this coopted aristocracy towards people, taxpayers and voters.
14. we need upper and lower political chambers
zionist forever   (10.20.13)
We have the Knesset which will propose bills then that will go to the upper chamber who who can study the bills comeback with any recomendations which can call for bills to be amended but not killed. Right now if the court is against it the bill is dead and we do have to start from scratch Changing the system will speed things up and it will be an elected body all the way but the Knesset doesn't get it all their own way as long as its not illegal. The only reason we are having this discussion now is because the court has to big of a say and MKS can justify changing judicial rules in the name of democracy. Will also make better law no more poltical parties steam rollering it through without any opportunity to recomend changed. Result is screw ups are made and its not till its law and the mistakes happen we realise we got it wrong so government just looks for scapegoats but if we can say before the bill is passed change A,B,C less likey to make mistakes.. Modern democracies have 2 chambers and its time Israel did as well. Good for the Knesset & courts.
15. It is not democracy
David ,   On this planet   (10.20.13)
When the Supreme court supports the enemy of the state.Meretz, Labor and friends are trying to destroy the state by supporting the enemy and forcing the majority to share our small and only state with criminals.Don't give up, keep fighting those lunatics
16. About time but way below par.
Israeli 2   (10.20.13)
The US Supreme Court with its judiciary powers encompass judges who are no less politically motivated and just like in Israel the judges reign supreme. This type of "sham democracy" does not produce blind justice or true justice but a shameful injustice to its citizens. With all due respect, Israel should abolish the knesset and its supreme court INjustice system, replacing it with one the world can learn from and adopt. It will start with a constitution and a bill of rights a la Israel. There will be no Haredi, Left or Right, Female or Male control.
17. It's called checks and balances
Aviela ,   Migron RC, Israel   (10.20.13)
Call apples apples, shall we? It is a necessary effort for cooperation, rather than the current situation of a country run by its court and propaganda.
18. Livni: it is not democracy if Supreme Court all leftists !
barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (10.20.13)
19. Peron and democracy
(10.20.13)
Like his namesake, Minister Peron knows nothing of democracy if he attacks MKs trying to democractically take power away from the self-appointed courts and give it to the people's representatives in the Knesset. If Peron is so sure that unelected judges are much better than the democratically elected MKs, he should propose a law where judges are no longer shielded from consequences of their decisions, and held liable when they make mistakes.
20. Dear Israeli 2
Non Jewish Immigrant ,   Haifa   (10.20.13)
A country having a single body that rules the state is called a dicatorship! You can check a good dictionary for the definition. A democracy is defined by its ability to separate powers and having parlamentaries elected by the citizens. These are basic civic lessons we learn in primary school. The Supreme Court exists as a some kind of "police" for the government in charge. It is also here to protect human rights and minorities rights.
21. Balance
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.20.13)
When politicians rule without check the country is in danger. Whether it be the right or the left or the religious or the secular, no single group can be objective. The point of having a supreme court that can overrule the Knesset is to balance the political ploys of the majority in the Knesset at any given time. That is what democracy is all about.
22. Haredi (king-maker) Cult Knesset a catastrophe!
Cyberbrain ,   Israel   (10.20.13)
FAR worse than Israel's High Court From the frying an into the fire Fix the Knesset FIRST or we self-destruct in even more extremist Haredi rule than is actually ruling the Knesset now.
23. No11 And it's good that it does so!
(10.20.13)
Because who will protect minorities and specially Arabs in Israel otherwise?? Certainly not the Knesset !
24. Shaked and Levin
M.C.   (10.20.13)
At last some sanity! Congratulations to Shaked and Levin, keep at it until you get results. The Supreme Court has far too much undeserved power which needs to be curtailed. Democracy is defined as 'government by the people and not government by the ludicrous left!
25. Make Knesset representative and you'd have a point
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (10.20.13)
Now, it isn't - and you don't!
26. Democracy is about balance in government
Avi   (10.20.13)
We have a set of basic laws that triumph all others. It is possible for newly made laws to contradict those basic laws, known as constitution in other countries. It is the job of the Supreme Court to make sure those basic laws are unchallenged. Just like in the US where the supreme court also has the power to repel laws that contradict the constitution. There will be no easy way out of this. If they're after specific laws getting passed without the Supreme Court shooting them down they'll have to open the gates of hell and try to change the basic laws that prevent that, instead of circumventing it and attacking the Court of Justice instead.
27. When the courts refuse to protect Jews
Ron ,   oc us   (10.20.13)
What do you do when the courts make terrible decisions? The judges must be replaced. The repealation of the immigration law puts Israel in grave danger when national security should be the first priority of the govermment.
28. danger
rm ,   NL Amsterdam   (10.20.13)
It's always dangerous when politicians try to change the judiciary system for political purposes....and there's no question this is just that.
29. Israel is behind MKs Shaked and Levin!
Chaim ,   Israel   (10.20.13)
It is way past time to make the far left High Court subservient to the Knesset and the Israeli people. Israelis are fed up with a constant stream of dumb, destructive High Court rulings which endanger Israelis and empower Israel's genocidal enemies. The High Court's ONLY mandate is to apply the law. It has no business making law. The High Court should also be elected. Keep up the great work MKs Shaked and Levin. Virtually all of Israel is behind you!
30. Ron, what are you talking about?
(10.20.13)
Refuse to protect Jews??? The whole country of Israel is basically protecting Jews solely! Bagatz is there to protect minorities rights!!!
