Gracias!
2.  Deserted Synagogues
non sentimental jew   (12.25.13)
I can understand that there is an sentimental urge amongst some people to return to the past of the shetl and fiddler on the roof way of life. But reality kicks in when you ask the question was it just due to the holocaust that these buildings, now lie abandoned and deserted? Or the fact that new generations of Jews decided to think for themselves
3. Mazel Tov & Thank You to the Dorfmans.Appreciation for your
Moshe ,   Usa   (12.25.13)

7. Decay
Shmuel Watchman ,   Vancouver Canada   (12.25.13)
Let the past bury itself as the Jews of Europe were buried. Let no Jews venture on European soil. It is a graveyard for Jews. European tourism of Jews is based on Jews visiting so called Jewish sites. This is like visiting and paying dollars to your enemies of old. Stop visiting Europe and all anti-Semitic countries. Visit the USA India and China. Let the ashes of European Jewry rest in peace. Do not go there. Non Jews are having a hoot at New York Jews visiting the graveyards. Do not spend your money in Europe. The UK is OK to some extent. Shmuel Shalom!
8. to "non sentimental jew"
Barry ,   Tel Aviv   (12.25.13)
I realize that people like you, who "think for themselves"don't bother reading history. I suggest you read up on the Jewish populations of Europe circa 1930-1950. To put it bluntly, 6,000,000 Jews were murdered in Europe, along with 7,000,000 others who actually thought for themselves. I feel sorry for people like you, who refer with pride to their ignorance, claiming that they are thinking for themselves.
9. #2 Secularists are as guilty of group think as anyone else.
jdc ,   New York, US   (12.25.13)
Losing 6m people tends to put a dent in shul membership. As for your implied narrative that "new Jews" have walked out due to evolved and progressive thinking (i.e. "religion is the opium for the masses", etc.) , there is nothing new in that. We are told this happened back in Egypt and countless times after: whoever wanted to stay, stayed and has been "dissolved". History is merciless here: Jewish future belongs to those who wish to be counted in. This extends beyond a preference for bagels and lox. The notion that secularists are independent thinkers would be more convincing if their arguments demonstrated deeper thought.
10. There is a website about synagogues in the Elzas
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.13)
Deserted ones , ruins , and even some still active . Not much knowledge of French is needed http://judaisme.sdv.fr/synagog/index.htm
11. 2 , non sentimental jew
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.25.13)
You probably don't know very much about the Shoa as you ask if they are deserted due to the Holocaust . You forgot that those synagogues are part of OUR history , and not only of religious Jews .
12. future springs from the past & the past lives in the future
CJK   (12.25.13)
it is well known that those who know not the past are condemned to repeat it. today we see a resurgence of open jew hatred in all of europe and even in the americas. we must preserve our past so as to insure our future.
13. 7 Shmuel,i would not recommend ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.25.13)
to abandon and neglect the graveyards of our ancestors.,if there is another possibility.
14. Sentiments, yes, but it shows how much rubbish was built.
Michael ,   California, USA   (12.25.13)
Judaism as a spiritual force did not need synagogues. It needed people who wanted to live the ideas, who wanted to believe in the ideals, not necessarily put up structures. The rabbis needed structures to impress, command and exploit their flock. Shame on such rabbis. May they not continue.
15. Thank you Dorfman, family.
michael Pielet ,   Israel   (12.25.13)
Listen carefully, you may hear the prayers of the millions of Jews that prayed in these schuls. Listen again you can hear the laughter of the children, their voices, their singing. May their memory be for a blessing. We will not forget them.

Jews of European origin have family members buried there who were NOT murdered during the Shoa . We can also visit families of GENTILES who saved us . And I'm doing it . We are also more connected to European culture than to US , Chinese or Indian .
19. 14 Michael, while you are at it ,why..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.26.13)
not save money on school buildings and teachers.Students can learn at home on internet.Of course a bad idea. May you find an effective solution of your personal problem . Pointing fingers is ineffective.
