Ed Whyman ,   Stockport, UK   (12.06.13)
Poem for Mandela* ********************* “Free, free at last …ˮ Into a world unknown --- Quarter of a century has passed, While he lived alone the dream Of a country without race, One people, free, Without the evil doctrine Of difference --- Inferiority, superiority, The mentality that lead to Auschwitz. And there he was Breaking rocks on Robin Island While the years of his life flowed by: The Sixties, the Seventies, the Eighties; Would he die there unfree, By consumption consumed, An offshore island of an imprisoned people. *(Written at the time of his release)

Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
9. What is Mandela's legacy ?
michael redbourn ,   Lisbon Portugal   (12.06.13)
I have such mixed feelings about Mandela and his contribution. Yes he helped overthrow apartheid against Blacks in SA but there is now apartheid against whites in SA. SA like Zimbabwe was once prosperous but both are now poverty stricken. And SA is now one of the most violent countries in the world.
10. What they don't want to remember
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (12.06.13)
When Mandala left prison he was still an unreformed Russian-style communist and would have remained so if the Soviet Union had not blown apart.Instead he and his ANC cronies switched to being China-style communists. To his last days Mandala was trapped in cold-war attitudes as reflected in his pro-Arab,anti-Israel stance that even allowed him to be best buddy to the terrorist thug,Yasser Arafat.. I don't mourn the passing of SA apartheid but I don't mourn Mandala's passing either. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
11. #2- I also do not mourn him!
MARK ,   USA   (12.06.13)
12. The world mourns an anti-semite
MARK ,   USA   (12.06.13)
He was a poor leader. South Africa is infested with crime. That is a very poor legacy!
13. #10 the good & bad about Mandela
Joe ,   LA, California   (12.06.13)
Mandela prevented an all out race war when he came into power so I commend him for that. However, he was very anti-Israel. He had no forgiveness for Israel because of Israel's relationship with South Africa during the apartheid era. I have been to South Africa and the Whites do like Israel a lot because of that but on the other hand do not like Jews in their own country. Some Blacks do not like Jews either or Israel. There is no place for Jews there. There is Antisemitism everywhere there. South Africa may turn into what Zimbabwe is today. The time to leave that place was a long time ago no matter what color your skin is. That is a hopeless country because of the people there. Even Mandela could not help them.
14. Mandella-worth a few good thoughts
Koose E Mack ,   NY USA   (12.06.13)
No one can deny that Mandela was a brave man who lived by his convictions. He fought Apartheid and paid for it dearly, as did many other Anti Apartheid activists. On the other hand, I have to consider that he was an Anti Zionist and stated that Israel was Apartheid. For that, I can't forgive him. Add to that the state of the country South Africa today. South Africa, was the "Jewel" of Africa; wealthy, vibrant, with a good standard of living. Look at it now!!!!!! The road to Hell is paved with good intention!
15. Finally.....
koose E Mack ,   NY USA   (12.06.13)
Mr. Benassi wrote a comment that I can agree with!!!!!!
16. Never thought he was controversial
mahidere   (12.06.13)
So, many white supremacist talkbackers. The thing is many blacks also believe Mandella sold out the cause of total black liberation in SA in favor of his acceptance to the western world. The measure should be 'what would true African liberation fighters like Patrice Lumumba think of Mandela?' Probably, not favorably.
17. Who will be first Arab PM of Palestine Israel? Salam Fayyad?
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
#7, 8, not mine.
18. Nelson Mandela
Harold ,   USA   (12.06.13)
Nelson Mandela is Anti-Apartheid, Anti-Colonization, Anti-Occupation Hero. He was always agains the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Lands and pro creation of a Palestian State living side by side with the State of Israel.
19. bought diamonds from racists accuse him of Anti-semitism?
miki ,   tampa   (12.06.13)
All the West from Washington to London supported Apartheid for generations, only the Russians and people like Qadaffi would even mention Mandela and now he is the bad guy-you are hypocrites.
20. 12
Harold ,   USA   (12.06.13)
You just feel the whole world are stupid and ideiots and you and your followers are the brightest dummies and fools on earth. He, Mendela, was against Israel's occupation and stealing Palestinian Lands and the Israeli aggression against the colonized Palestinain people.
21. Since US already has a Muslim President, Israel should too
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
22. #1 Ivan
Rick S. ,   USA   (12.06.13)
Really? He was anti Israel and anti USA. The Jews helped to free him and he could wait to become Arafat's buddy.
23. #18 Harold
Rick S. ,   USA   (12.06.13)
You sound like a typical far left dreamer. Get real and deal with realities. The Palis do not want to live in peace with Israel. They want to destroy Israel.
24. #2 and #11
Harold ,   USA   (12.06.13)
Mendela was anti-apartheid, anti-colonizagtion and aniti-occupation of the Palestinian land and that does not make him an anti-semitic. The whole world is mourning except you and your followers. Try to respect your own ten commandments.
25. #15, that's because I was in ZAR before and after Mandela
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
26. Mandela???, 25% unemployment, people living on US$1.00 a day
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
South Africa is an experiment in redistribution and colossal failure.
27. Under Mandela most Whites became poor and Blacks even poorer
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.06.13)
28. #22 Rick
Ivan ,   South Africa   (12.06.13)
I disagree with your statement. Mandela was a friend to leaders of many countries of the world. South African Jews have the most respect for Mandela as he was a Man of his Word and called a spade a spade. Mandela left a legacy that teaches all South Africans to have respect for colour and religion. He was definitely not anti-semitic. At present, we have many Israeli Jews living and working in South Africa and they are in no hurry to go back to Israel. They feel very welcome in this country.
29. 72 virgins for Mandela??
