israel's security would not be enhanced by having another, american-backed jihadist regime next door, so no matter how distasteful the assad dictatorship is, a (significantly weakened) assad is somewhat preferable, because he is a pragmatist and less likely to go to war against israel. but the best strategy for israel is to let the fire burn itself out. the only danger is that as the fortunes of war turn against the rebels, they will increase their provocations along the border, to try to draw the idf into the fight. which would be foolish, since israel is providing them with (free) emergency medical aid, but for true believers, that's just another roadblock on their highway to paradise...

That its all the world is now understanding from them. They have damaged their image so badly that no one expecting anything remotely peaceful form them anymore. They have no agenda for life. They fight in the name of God and in hopes to just destroy whatever is around or considered non Muslim.
