6. They are called "rule outs"
Mea   (12.24.13)
As a former organ donor coordinator, I can inform you that blood and tissue and organ donors are indeed screened for rule outs. You want this, believe me. In this man's case, he arrived with a gay friend and was likely judged based upon that. Anytime an inconsistency occurs in the interview prices the screener has the option to call it. Obviously this time, the call was not right. You would likely be surprised how often family members tried to convince me their loved one should be accepted in spite of a rule out, like it was some sort of goal of theirs to be able to declare they donated. A rule out could be a history of using drugs, or getting a "homemade" tattoo--or homosexuality. I interviewed until a rule out popped up. You would be amassed at how many people became angry. In the USA, the screening process is dependent upon the interview skills of coordinators. One method of avoiding errors that result in contamination is to err on the side of caution. I do not feel good about the hurt caused by the declines I made but if I ever had a slight doubt I declined the donor, and I know to this day I did my best to preserve the integrity of the tissue and organs I procured.

11. And even if he was gay...?!
g ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
What difference does it make if a person is gay or not...? If his/her blood is clean and can help save lives then who cares? As a straight person I think this is a completely bigoted policy! As usual the public will just shrug it's shoulder in evidence of clear bigotry in our society... pathetic!
12. Ynet dramatising a medical safety issue
(12.24.13)
13. Nothing strange
Danny Kohn ,   Boden, Sweden   (12.24.13)
This is so globally with only small differences between countries. Giving blood is no human rights issue and should not be treated like one. It is a strict epidemiological issue and practices are in the patience best interest given the problem to test blood for HIV.
14. #7
mark ,   ca   (12.25.13)
Make sense? Only for idiots.. Heterosexual man or women may also can be infected by AIDS.
15. I am banned because I'm British...
Adam ,   Ramat Gan   (12.25.13)

16. Good question Nuftali
keren ,   Tzafon, Israel   (12.25.13)
I also can't give blood - because I take heart medication. Someone who takes medication can reasonably be trusted to answer the questionnaire honestly. However, do you think that all recreational drug users and gays and bi's are likely to answer the questions correctly? It would be a scandal if it turns out that not all donated blood is screened. Ynet do something useful and find that out for us...
17. Gays cant donate blood in Australia
Dale ,   Sidney australia   (12.25.13)

18. risk is risk- better to leave risks out
a simple jew   (12.26.13)
and: in case you or your children need blood-donations and you have to choose between... - what would YOU  take...? it is good to reduce risks, even if it can happen, that one or several people fall out (this we should regard and tell them as their donation/s for the society and healthy jewish community).
