1. We proudly claim that we hold ourselves
On the Balcony   (01.03.14)
to higher standards. The world has a right to demand that we at least live up to their lower standards. It's the settlements, stupid, it's the settlements.
2. The question is .....
Jon ,   UK   (01.03.14)
are jews inherently bad ? There is a massive amount of evidence to suggest they are and very little to suggest they are not. Not enough space to discuss here. Jews major failing is not understanding why no-one likes them, never have and never will. Until then, whine on ....... In one hundred years the Jewish tribe will be very small, just extremists, the rest will have been assimilated.
3. Stupid donkey
Non Jewish Immigrant   (01.03.14)
You have "forgotten" to tell us why the taxi driver called you a stupid donkey...
4. Your "Bubble Tour" of Israel did not include West Bank, Gaza
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (01.03.14)
5. Get over it
Just another Jew ,   Amsterdam Netherland   (01.03.14)
"Academic boycott of Israel is remnant of some people's conviction..." that Israel's policy of subjugation and occupation is inherently bad. So get over the crocodile tears
6. Numerus clausus ?
Marian ,   Romania   (01.03.14)
They haven't said yet anything about reintroducing numerus clausus in their universities and medical schools ! I wouldn't be surprised, given their 'enthusiasm" !
7. Jon, #2
Jason, Ph.D. ,   Charlotte, USA   (01.03.14)
Jon, thank you for unwittingly supporting the author's points. Also, Jon, much of the world hated the Jews for bringing Monothesism to the world. Quite frankly, I don't want to be liked by moral light-weights such as you. I also believe that when you pass on to the world -to -come, you will have the opportunity to spend some time with Hitler. He will welcome you with open arms. Enjoy!
8. To Jon
Marty ,   Toronto   (01.03.14)
Jews have survived the Ancient Egyptians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Nazis and the modern Arabs. As far as assimilation, Jon, if I was you in the UK, I'd be more concerned on the fact that in less than a generation Islam will be the majority religion in the UK (no more pubs for you) and the Royal Family will be sent into exile. Your grandchildren and your grandchildren's children will probably be praying to Allah. Meanwhile the Jews will still be here.
9. "On the balcony", jump!
Sidney ,   USA   (01.03.14)
Good article, it is time to call these people what they really are, anti-Semites.
10. reply to #2
Steve Goodman ,   Israel   (01.03.14)
Jon you are full of #2, and you pray to one of our "small" tribe.......
11. Really?
Iis ,   Helsinki   (01.03.14)
Israel has occupied WB about 40 years ago. Since then, the territory that virtually had no Israelis, now is a home to thousands, from more than 50% of territory Palestinians are completely excluded, the areas populated by Palestinians are not in focus of occupiers whatsoever (like in other occupations, i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan where the Americans at least give aid build schools etc). The movement of people is severely restricted, roads build intersecting Palestinian areas are not accessible to them. All these things are happening for 40 years now without end in sight, and you are surprised that there is some protest in the West against it? You are blaming it on complex psychological factors rather than an obvious decade long occupation? In West they have been protesting in different ways against policies in Tibet, South Africa, US intervention in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan etc., pro and against interventions in Bosnia and Kosovo, Georgia... But some minor protest against obvious problem lasting 40 years should be attributed to ridiculous things. Pathetic article.
12. Racism expressed on talkback by Jon
Maurice Solovitz ,   London, England   (01.03.14)
Jon, your sweeping generalisation is the very definition of bigotry. History is an interesting discipline - you should open a book sometime - not one written by bigots and racists but one that talks honestly of human failings and hate harnessed as a weapon of conquest - not us but you. Of that there is to quote you "massive evidence."
13. Amazing talkbacks today
Jon S. ,   Virginia, USA   (01.03.14)
The author nails it and the talkbacks confirm it. As for we Jews, we're far from perfect and we acknowledge it every day in our hearts and prayers. Myself, I've more empathy for the Tibetans than the Palestinians. The Tibetans love their own children more than they hate the Chinese.
14. Remember Hawaii
Tom W ,   USA   (01.03.14)
The U.S. illegally occupied the Kingdom of Hawaii, imprisoned its queen, Liliuokalani, and made it an "American" state in '59. Take a look at post WWII. Europe's map to see how nations were "remade" according to the winner's whim.
15. "Posh" British accent: ugh
ASTRONAUT ,   SC, USA   (01.03.14)
What is it about speaking with an annoyingly clipped, nasal, "British" accent, that immediately tags the speaker as "posh," erudite," "educated," or "insightful?" Oh jolly good: a Brit! He MUST know the Encyclopedia Brittanica inside and out! Excuse me whilst I barf.
16. To Jon at No. 2
Joe Bliksem ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (01.03.14)
I do realise that nobody has ever liked us and never will. That's why I choose to live in Israel and defend her and why I know that we HAVE to be cleverer than everyone - including you. Am Yisrael Chai.
17. Proposed New Name for ASA
Jason,Ph.D. ,   Charlotte, USA   (01.03.14)
How about the Anti-Semitic Association? Also, I urge all of you who are opposed to this ignorant boycott of Israel to go to the ASA website and submit a comment to them. Keep it tasteful, but don't be afraid to call them Anti-Semites.
18. When Jews will stop seclude themselves
Non Jewish immigrant ,   Haifa   (01.03.14)
And have a real introspection on themselves, they'll understand that they are part of this world too and will stop whining
19. Number 11 from Helstinky
iLan Frid ,   New York   (01.03.14)
Hey number 11 This "West Bank" you speak of was in actuality Judea and Samaria. What then? How far does your version of this planet's human history goes back to?
20. #9 Calling people anti-Semites simply
On the Balcony   (01.03.14)
avoids the real issue. A growing number of proud principled zionist Israeli Jews openly refuse to work beyond the green line. I personally oppose the settlements because I believe that they are illegal, immoral and impractical. The world has been saying much the same for over 40 year. If it takes boycotts and sanctions to force a change then so be it. Calling people like me names will not change my position or further your own.
21. Jon, you are more interested on us than we'r onJesus/Mohamed
Ibrahim Sued ,   Rio de Janeiro   (01.04.14)
22. Hatred towards Jews
Joe Mevorah ,   Lincoln, USA   (01.03.14)
Hatred towards Jews is as ancient as the original anti-Semite, Paul. Nothing much has changed over the course of history. Let the world think whatever it wants to. It's not important what the world thinks. It's only important what Jews do. To the so called civilized British intellectuals, UP YOURS!
23. Excellent column
Daniel   (01.03.14)
I couldn't agree more, this column nails the double standard and immoral position of the boycotters.
24. Peter
To Joe Bliksem ,   Poland   (01.03.14)
You're deeply mistaken. I like you and if I came to Israel I'll invite you for invite for a pint of beer. Don't give up.
25. Boycott of Jews ... or of Israel
Jacob Edelman ,   New York,USA   (01.04.14)
I am slightly confused . Did the American Studies Association decide on boycott of Jews or .. of Israel ? So where does the claim of anti-semitism find its root?
26. #18 non
solomon ,   bklyn   (01.04.14)
Israel is a part of the world, you just close you eyes to it. They have sent teams to help in world wide disasters, exported countless new inventions, assist their sworn enemies by treating them in their hospitals; things most countries would not even think of doing. Look for what is there, not only for what you think is there.
27. I shall rephrase it: Antisemitism is fueled by a suspicion,
tom ,   tel aviv   (01.04.14)
that Jews MAY be somewhat superior to the rest of Humanity. God knows there are many (misleading) clues to that. In order to cover that ignoble feeling, various excuses are being made up all the time. From the jolly old: "they've crucified our Lord" to "international kabal of capitalists/communists" to "occupational forces" to "settlers". Their problem, not mine. All I have to do is make sure we don't become (again) victims of their ugly mind-set. I suspect though, that antisemitism will die only when mankind dies, or: the Imaginary Friend finally clears His throat and in a loud voice from Heaven proclaims our Chosenness ;-)
28. fast to condemn Israel
FF ,   Rio de Janeiro   (01.04.14)
Lots of people, and so called intellectual, in the world, are fast to condemn Israel but I don't see any of them worried about Edward Snowden. Hypocrites.
29. Bad jooz are traditional Jew-hate tropes.
Stephen in New York   (01.04.14)
A traditional trope of Jew-hate that the jooz this and the jooz that and thus explains why hundreds died in bombings for nothing in Argentina. A traditional trope of Jew-hate that the jooz caused their own deaths by their bad behavior. The made their killers mad and now they must die.
30. First they massacred us; now they boycott us. Progress!
Yaniv ,   Israel   (01.04.14)
