Pollard is an American citizen that betrayed his country. He played the Jewish card when he got caught stealing secrets from his American employer. America separates religion from State, so the Jewish religious card or the defacto Israeli citizenship card doesn't mean sh*t to Americans. Most American Jews have no connection with Israel and consider it a foreign country just like most African Americans perceive the countries of Africa.

but the reality is Pollard is scheduled for release in 2015 and the effort to free him "early" is a publicity stunt. He could have been freed all along if he had confessed and agreed to not discuss what he did. That doesn't roll with the profitable lecture circuit and the so called "folk hero" status. Pollard being used to create this illusion will further divide American Jews from Israelis. This is because in America, we see him as a traitor. The old fart Peres just wants to put this under his column. Freeing Pollard is not a mitzvah but simply a grave misunderstanding of the relationship between our countries. It will make many Americans distrust Israel and will cause commentators on talk shows go nuts against Israel. BAD idea.

Maybe Obama will listen more to Peres then to Bibi. Peres not criticises Obama about his attitude to Israel. To gratify Peres' behaviour and to slam Bibi's oppositional behaviour towards the USA president about a lot of political matters Obama will maybe give amnesty to Pollard. to free Jonathan Pollard is to name his handlers. Do that and Pollard could have been freed 20 years ago. This is the uncomfortable truth our political leaders do not want us to know about

Pollard never spied on America, he only gave Israel access to vital information about Arab states - information that the USA should have shared with Israel in the first place. Yes, Pollard played "the Jewish card", but only because the US Justice department played it first, sticking him with an unusually harsh punishment only because he is a Jew. Similar espionage offenders who were non-Jews got off with much lighter sentences. There is really no limit to the American hypocrisy. Spying on Israeli politicians, and forcing Israel to release Palestinian murderers, yet keeping Pollard (who never killed anyone) in jail out of sheer spite.

All our political leaders have to do is name Pollard's handlers and he can be on a plane to Israel tomorrow. Why haven't they done this? Is what you should be asking Peres, rather than whinging about another country's judiciary
