1. "Extortion"
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (01.13.14)
..."is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion. Refraining from doing harm is sometimes euphemistically called protection."
2. ridiculous proposal
david ,   new york   (01.13.14)
if something was made on shabbat it is against halacha to use it even after shabbat. also, someone who desecrates the sabbath is not considered halachicly reliable and so can not be trusted for kashrut in general. basically this law is intended to rewrite jewish law to match the needs and desires of politicians.
3. Hotels have open restaurants on...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.13.14)
Shabat. Can kashrut of restaurants, cooking on Shabat, be trusted? I don't think so.
4. Would you trust a pneumologist..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.13.14)
that smokes? A restaurant that cooks on Shabat is as trustworthy,in my opinion.
5. Nobody who cares about kosher will eat in a place open......
Kayla ,   Israel   (01.13.14)
on Shabbat. Doesn't matter if they have a "food is kosher" sign or not.
6. Brilliant Comment.....
Koose E Mack ,   NY USA   (01.13.14)
If you're not familiar with the laws of Kashrut and/or Judaism, why make a derogatory comment. Incidentally, even if there is a Kashrut Certificate granted for an eatery opened on Shabbat, most observant Jews will not eat there. We have plenty of "Kosher Delis" in NYC opened on Shabbat that sell "Kosher Foods". No Observant Jews eat there.
7. Kashrut
Edouard ,   Montreal canada   (01.14.14)
It's about time to remove the power from hortodox and give it to the state Kosher food as nothing to do with shabat
8. Stern is Very Mixed Up
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (01.14.14)
He is out to destroy Judaism in Israel. He has a some sort of vendetta against rabbis and established Jewish institutions and practices. He is very dangerous since, unlike Mr. Y. Lapid, this man prances about with a kippa on his head and talks like he is doing all this for the greater good. He knows he is making a mess, and he is very excited that he is doing so. He is a very mixed up person.
9. Let the homemade hi-court give their "kosher" certificate
Chaim ,   Israel   (01.14.14)
Any Rabbi who gives a kosher certificate on a store that is open on Shabbat is not trustworthy and most religious Jews would refrain from his hechsher and from his rule in general.
10. The problem is...
ariel ,   rbs   (01.14.14)
that the mashgichim won't been working on shabbat. So who will enforce that the separate set of dishes is actually being used on shabbat? If a restaurant knows that there will never be an inspection on shabbat, there's no reason to assume that they will maintain kashrut standards on that day (if they're open on shabbat, then observing halacha is clearly not their chief priority).
11. Is this new?
Joseph ,   London England   (01.14.14)
During my first visit to Jerusalem as a student, we all paid for our meals before Shabbat and brought in our receipts on Shabbat to be served our meals in the kosher restaurant. How is the new law different?
13. Separate religion from state!!!!
nadav ,   tlv   (01.14.14)
Once again, religion should NOT be mixed with politics. NO one wins from this "unholy" mix, not the religious, and certainly not secular people! Restaurant owners should choose their own Hashgacha, as they do abroad!
14. this is how it starts
Ben Ish   (01.14.14)
an illogical tiny legislative inroad here, another little one there. They expect for the reasonable mind to capitulate because it seems such a small argument, and not worth it. given enough time, and enough illogical little laws, and eventually you have a state run by psychotic lunatics. That is how it started in UK and US, do you want to go that way? No? Then stop ridiculous legislation like this. Food sold on Shabbat IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. The fact that they want Kashrut certification shows empirically that they are trying to -steal- something. Think about it. Why Kashrut sold on Shabbat? They are up to something, and must be stopped.
15. To Chaim number 9
Shimon ,   Poleg   (01.14.14)
So you've never eaten in a hotel in Israel? they are kosher but open for business and taking money on the shabbat. Most Hotels in Israel do not keep the Shabbat but they are still Kosher.

18. Ora , they don't cook on Shabbat
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.14)
The food is prepared before Shabbat begins , and stored in "ovens" to hold them warm . They use those "ovens" also on weekdays , have seen it . Not trusting Jews is giving "food" to anti-Semites : "look , even Jews don't trust each other" they will say
19. Ora , i think that hotel restaurants on Shabbat
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.14)
only serve food to their guests , who do not have to pay . Where would their religious guests go to eat , if not at the hotel where they stay ?
20. 15Kosher Hotel don't cook on Shabat.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.15.14)
21. To Shimon 16
ariel ,   rbs   (01.15.14)
I WOULD eat at a MEHADRIN hotel in Israel and I'll tell you why. All the food is prepared BEFORE shabbat and kept warm on warming trays. In addition, the mashgiach sleeps at the hotel AND IS PRESENT to oversee operations on shabbat. Non-mehadrin hotels may follow the same procedure (I'm not sure) but I wouldn't eat at those hotels (even during the week) for other reasons (e.g. non-Glatt meat, untithed fruits and vegetables, etc.)..
22. Ora , they do NOT cook on Shabbat
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.14)
The food is prepared before Shabbat , and put in big "ovens" to keep them hot . They use those "ovens" also on weekdays when there is a dinner with many guests . Was at the "Renaissance" for such an event .
23. Ora , they do NOT cook on Shabbat !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (01.15.14)
The food is prepared before Shabbat , and put in big "ovens" to keep them hot . They use those "ovens" also on weekdays when there is a dinner with many guests . Was at the "Renaissance" for such an event . Not trusting a Jew is giving "food" to anti-Semites who can say : You see even Jews don't trust each other !
24. To Shimon from Poleg
Jeff ,   Jerusalem   (01.15.14)
Shimon -- kosher hotels only take money before or after the Shabbat for the services and food they offer. They also do not prepare any of the cooked food on Shabbat itself, but make it before Shabbat and simply heat and serve the food on Shabbat. And finally, all kosher hotels have a mashgiach at the hotel the entire Shabbat to make sure all of the rules about kashrut are being kept. Let me know if you have any other questions...
25. hotels are different
Shalom Hartman   (01.15.14)
most hotels in Israel do NOT cook on Shabbat; they keep the food hot or heat ready-cooked food in a permissible manner on Shabbat.
26. 23 I know Charles,having spend...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.15.14)
many holidays in israeli hotels. You are absolutely right. We must be very careful not to give food to anti-semites.
27. to 24 and others
Shimon ,   Poleg   (01.15.14)
All non-Haredi hotels take money on shabbat from anyone who wants to drink coffee in the lobby, have a beer at the bar, eat by the pool or in the hotel restaurant. You guys really do not have a clue and clearly have never been to a hotel in Israel! The music is on round the pool and people are enjoying themselves this is Israel not Iran! There is a shabbat lift for the religious and certain freshly freshly cooked food is not available.
28. 27 In how many Kosher non-Haredi ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (01.15.14)
hotels have YOU seen what you stated?.
29. kosher-open on shabbat
rut ,   karmiel Israel 21732   (01.16.14)
many people who keep kosher would eat in a restaurant open on shabbat
30. Let secular go their way ie dissapear
TheyWillSimplyDisapr ,   Jerusalem Israel   (01.16.14)
The secular population is small but vocal ( media ) but demographically getting smaller and smaller so let them do what ever they want eventually they will demographic out altogether let history take its time sad but that's always been Jewish history its called in the Torah "The Sifting" what will eventually remain will be a demographic majority of strong Jews dedicated to their faith and nation
