2. Good bye, Pete
Bye Bye   (01.28.14)
We were almost neighbors. Beacon was the home and work lab of Pete. I just hope that Pete from Heaven will win a new wide view on our planet with lots of new details.
3. pete was a good musical note chaser, but he wasn't to bright
Moshe ,   Usa   (01.28.14)
He was just like all the rest of the liberals: 1] seeking attention & aclaim from those who were stupid enough to believe his liberal views & 2] dumb enough to think so highly of himself for erroneously posing to solve the worlds problems. He would never acknowledge the endless Jewish suffering.
4. #1-2 and 3
David israel ,   new York, USA   (01.28.14)
I started to learn the guitar in the 1950ies (This is how old I am) by playing his songs and the sheet music that he made available to the world. He never considered himself highly. He was a modest man living a modest life at Beacon NY. He was - to a degree - a naive idealist and he was fully aware of it. He was a member of communist party but then he resigned. In the 1930ies and 1940ies he strongly supported the Jews and the creation of Israel. Around that time he had praised the Kibbutz of Israel. There are many great songs written about peace such as Imagine from John Lennon, Le deserteur from Borice Vian but the one that makes the strongest point is where Have All The Flowers Gone.
5. He wrote a few good songs
Ron ,   oc us   (01.28.14)
No friend of Israel, not much of an enemy either. Turn, Turn, Turn. RIP
6. Pete Seeger, RIP
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (01.28.14)
The great folk singer, Pete Seeger, quickly came to know the truth about Zionism and very courageously opposed it vigorously. If he were alive and in good health today, he would be a leader in the BDS movement. Alas, a voice for Free Palestine is gone. RIP, Pete Seeger.
7. "Pete Seeger doesn't sing about refuseniks"
Dan ,   NJ   (01.28.14)
Pete Seeger was a talented artist and a charismatic personality, but his reputation as a champion of social justice was gratuitous and overstated, as was his image as a "voice of the common folk." He was the Harvard-educated son of intellectuals, and like the secular, intellectual NY Jewish leftists who made up much of his audience, he was selective about which human rights causes he championed. He was quick to lend his voice in support of oppressed peoples in South Africa, Nicaragua, the American South, etc., but he did not have much to say about oppressed Jews in the Soviet Union. He helped to inspire a "folk revival" by crafting sing-along anthems for salon Socialists, and by co-opting the songs of other cultures and teaching them to collegiate audiences who had no idea what they were singing about. "I've been doing some hard traveling..." Where? From the college dorm to the chemistry lab? He openly supported Israel until Israel started winning. Given his ambivalence about Israel, the least he could have done was to refund his earnings from "Tzena Tzena," the Israeli song that helped him to build his career. Yes, Pete Seeger was a leftist icon, but when it comes to real music that real "folk" listen to, John Lennon said it best: "Today's folk music is rock and roll."
8. Seeger, the singer and the philosopher
Larry ,   LA (formerly)   (01.28.14)
Seeger was one of the greatest folk singers that America ever produced. His liberal politics, however, were not in keeping with the reality of mankind. It is idealistic to believe that there will be an end to war just because it it a good idea. The nature of mankind is not able to get over their petty and real differences. In this area Seeger was out of his environment and stunk. may his songs continue to bring joy and happiness to all.
