31. #2 Sagi: Well said!
Jim Yakamoto ,   My Country   (02.03.14)
I hope Moon, Obama, Kerry, Cameron Ashton and the rest of the EUStan understand the words "recognizing Jewish State 'is out of the question'. I am sure they will find a reason to say that Abbas was misquoted! Of course he won't recognize Israel as a Jewish State because he doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist. For him from Metulla to Eilat is Palestine and it must be "Jew Free". He said that.
32. #11 Doives: Sign a treaty with whom?
Reader ,   Land of Israel   (02.03.14)
Have you ever thought that Abu Mazen might not have a mandate to sign a treaty? When was the last election in "Palestinian" and do you really think he would win one now? Hamas, an integral part of "Palestine", has stated quite clearly it does no recognize the Peace negotiations so again, with who do you sign?
33. #5 This is why recognition of a Jewish State is important
Michael Redbourn ,   Lisbon Portugal   (02.03.14)
If Jews are not perceived as a nation but as a religious community, they have no authentic claim for sovereignty over any part of the land. Lapid sometimes opens his mouth before engaging his brain.

bernard ross   (02.03.14)
Nato, like UN troops will leave as soon as told to leave by PA. turkey is part of Nato. this is as absurd as every other time the UN was to serve and then fled.
36. Real issue: Israel is real. Palestine is fictional.
Chaim ,   Israel   (02.03.14)
Israel has no need of Abbas' recognition. This is a nonsensical issue. The real issue is that this tiny land belongs to Jews, while "Palestine" is a fictional land dreamed up in the 1960s to justify Israel's destruction.
37. #33, 34 - correct!
sharpshin ,   USA   (02.03.14)
Michael -- that would be correct. And if we look at biblical claims dispassionately, we would have to admit that while faith persists, science has shown there is very little factual evidence to support the most fundamental accounts. No evidence for the Exodus, no verification of any lavish kingdoms of David and Solomon. So, where does that leave the rationale for recreating a Bronze Age kingdom as imagined by 20th century Zionists?
38. Fictional jews, fictional israel.

40. Michael #22, try for once to think outside the box
Jake   (02.03.14)
When Netanyahu asked Abbas to recognize Israel a the Jewish State, he did not ask Abbas or anyone else to recognize Halacha as the law of the land, and Abbas knows that. He meant Israel is the State of the Jewish people, with a Jewish majority and national character. that was, after all, the entire principle of the partition idea since the days of the Mandate: A Jewish State and an Arab State. Abbas won't agree to that because he does not want to end all claims against Israel, in particular the "right of return" of Arab refugees and their descendants to lands in pre-1967 Israel...and that includes Haifa.
41. sharpshin #37, tell the whole truth, not half the truth.
Jake   (02.03.14)
You're wrong about David and Solomon, for whose kingdoms archeology has been revealing increasing evidence. It is true that the archeologists have not been able to uncover any evidence outside the Bible for the Exodus. But the concensus among the archeologists and scholars is that the Israelites were entirely indigenous to the land, and evolved directly from the primeval inhabitants. That, I would say, is quite fatal to the antizionist/ antisemitic ideology that we hear and read about today. Is there any evidence for the Exodus outside the Bible? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

tom ,   toronto, canada   (02.04.14)
abbas is the chairman of fatah and the plo - the term "demilitarized" is meaningless, as arafat (yi"sh) amply demonstrated. once the idf is out, nato will be no more effective at blocking the plo than unifil is in lebanon; hezbollah has rebuilt its forces and rocket arsenals despite un resolution 1701. and getting rid of them altogether is just one artificially-provoked crisis away. so why is recognizing israel such a sticking? because abbas vows, in arabic, that any agreement with israel is only an interim step in the plan to ultimately drive the jews into the sea.
