1. Why furious if they got the money?
R ,   Israel   (02.05.14)
"Politicians from Israel's Haredi community reacted furiously " - why? They claim that the money for February has been transferred, and that by next month, there will be a new law, so whay be furious? My kid served in the idf in two wars, and I have to pay for university in full, not an agora of help, plus I'm paying for the yeshiva funding through my taxes. I'm furious. That and 5 shekels will get me an espresso at Cofix.
2. Haredi refuse to serve the country either in the IDF or Nati
roxy ,   israel   (02.05.14)
It is despicable that Haredi men are allowed to avoid both the draft and national service, and the government funds their Yeshiva studies and provides their families with income. Yet secular men and women must serve the country unless they are physically disabled. The Haredi men view women as inferior because they are women, yet the women in the IDF and doing national service are providing for the security of the Haredi men as well, those men should be ashamed of them selves! No where is it written that all Haredi men should study torah and do nothing else, in the Days of the Torah(Biblical times) men studied and also protected their communities and provided food for their families, without relying on others... an example are the Maccabees, and most other heroes of our past. So Man up and either serve in the IDF or national service and contribute in a way that shows the secular citizens of the country that you care as much too, Prayer is fine but it is not the only thing and only in Israel do the Haredi population not participate in serving their country, in NYC Haredi men are actually serving in the NYPD !
3. Apparently gov't not using strict enough measures.
barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (02.05.14)
4. Torah scholars are the pillars of the Jewish land
Hillel ,   Jerusalem   (02.05.14)
Torah scholars are the ones supporting and protecting the Jewish land more than soldiers carrying arms. How is it that the High Court in Israel is so illiterate that they don't know this fundamental concept? Is the High Court perhaps followers of Satmar philosophy that haredim may not take money from the Zionist government because money from unclean sources pollutes holy Jewish souls?
5. The gods of the supine court have spoken
Eliezer Meshulam ,   Beit Shemesh   (02.05.14)
Israel's Supreme Cult is motivated by hatred of Torah and is not interested in sensitivity but in bloodshed. They are antithetical to justice & democracy! Unelected, unvetted, unqualified, inhumane, autocratic, leftist, unthoughtful, uncaring, elitist, creatures of the dark side. What in the world are we doing with them in OUR JEWISH COUNTRY? Send them all packing. Establish a JEWISH CONSTITUTION UNDER TORAH! Care for the PEOPLE, poor, rich, religious, secular, THESE ARE OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS!
6. #4 is that so?
Haim   (02.05.14)
The pillars of the Jewish land? well is that so? Does that include sponging off the state, milking the system dry while contributing nothing? Attacking women on buses. Spitting at 8 year old girls rioting and attacking our security forces, guess these are the values you are so keen to promote. let me tell you are blood is no less precious than theirs> My son gave the best years of his life to the army and then went on to become a doctor, saving peoples lives and contributing to the state. So spare us your lectures and stop making excuses for that bunch of parasites, No one asked them to pray for the state of Israel, they can do that at their own expense not mine.
7. Shalom, Hillel in Jerusalem
ASTRONAUT ,   SC, USA   (02.05.14)
It is wonderful that you and your fellow Torah scholars embrace the Word of HaShem and carry forth His Name to eternity - but Hillel, please wake up and recognize that, unfortunately, Jews MUST carry arms as well as Torah, to smite our never-ending enemies. Am Israel, Chai, Hillel, may G-d Bless and keep the brave men and women of the IDF.
8. An engorged Yeshiva culture hurts Jews
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (02.05.14)
Torah Scholars, a few, may do some good for continuity of the religious. They most certainly are not pillars nor protect; That is brainwash Martyrs who died in the Holocaust had Scholars of a higher level, than today yet failed.. Under Torah Laws of Moses young men 20 and above served in the army Chareidi are abusing the funding and protection to the cost of other Israelis
9. #5 the angry man from medieval Beit Shemesh
Michael ,   Haifa   (02.05.14)
Wow !!!!! You sound really p****d off, which pleases me no end, and I am also glad that I am not your "brother" to be cared for by your joke of a Constitution
10. Okay
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (02.05.14)
That was the last yeshiva funding. We already have more Torah "scholars" than we need; besides, those who wish to study Torah will find a way, whether they are funded or not. Right? One follows one's life passion, doesn't one? Who cares about the money, if you're doing what you love?
11. # 4 He who wont work wont eat.
BUILD BABY BUILD!!!! ,   United States   (02.05.14)
No army is armed solely by prayers. Don't take the money don't live in Israel. Easy.

Alice ,   Israel/Canada   (02.05.14)
The Haredim make do with less of what it takes you and takes me to spend in a day.. Even with so little, they need that little.........
13. 4=5= Would the haredi Rabbis have accepted a compromise...
robert ,   Antwerpen (2018)   (02.05.14)
it would not have gone to the high court. The compromise proposed by Lapid was that 1800 would have been exempted from every year and that the others would have been able to postpone. Even that proposal could have been negotiated but was met by a "NIET" just like Brejnev said to Reagan. Well, you don't solve problems without compromises

Your quote from either Marx or Lenin is truly heartwarming. As for your advice about not living in Israel, well, at least you put your money where your mouth is....
