31. Stop the hypocrasy
Cynic #2   (02.09.14)
Israelis of east European origin lined up in front of the embassies in Tel Aviv to get EU passports. So is it Ok for Ashkenazis to get EU passports and 'verbotten' for Sephardic Jews to do so? This just shows how discrimination is inbred in Israeli society!
32. Medina and Tamam are NOT Jewish last names!
drakon   (02.09.14)
They are Arab and Islamic last names, What is the reason that Jews would have Islamic last names? People who had Medina and Tamam were most likely Muslims and not Jews. There is simply no Jewish connection to these two last names unless Jews intentionally copied Arab last names to hide their true identity ae crypto jews
33. Utterly pointless!!!!!
Ilan ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (02.09.14)
The only reason Jews ended up in Spain was because they were exiled from from here first! Jews have been exiled from many places, enslaved, and faced extermination plenty, but we are now home! Even if the entire world doesn't recognize it as rightfully ours( in whole or parts) , we are here! Its funny how this "right of return" has conditions stating, if you are not like us, you still can't join us! Therefore it has no parallel to the Palestinians demand of right of return which sole purpose is to inject their way of life into ours , and establish a majority to drive us out completely! I have this feeling that the sole intention of this new legislation is just to stick it to the State of Israel somehow!
34. A suggestion.Rather give Spanish Citizenship to the Lads in
Alan ,   SA   (02.09.14)
TA Bus Station and the Levinsky "Park" they occupy-instead of to .the Spanish and Portugese Jews. The latter don't need it as much as the former do.. Then they can chose a benefit friendly EU country and depart Israel to everyone's happiness
35. #26
(02.09.14)
The problem was the offensive headline about "righting a wrong". Many countries encourage productive immigrants (like Chinese and Koreans) and there is nothing wrong with that. Spain could have done the same with the Jews. Instead it is insulting that when the Spanish economy is in trouble they talk about "righting wrongs" instead of "we need help". Trust me, if Spain had made this gesture in anytime between 1933 and 1945, people would admire you. As for England, no one forgets UK crimes: especially stealing Israel from the Jews and turning her over to their Arab allies, and of course their collaboration with the Germans in the Shoah.
36. Half of Latin American+Ashkenazim
Nina   (02.09.14)
Considering that names like Lopes, Rodriguez and Gonzales are on the list one can assume that half of Latin America is eligible. Plus, why on earth are there so many clearly Ashkenazi names like Schlesinger, Bloch, Goldenberg on the list? Very strange!
37. Spain
Zvi ,   Bat Yam   (02.09.14)
To # 26 Merca Probably they did not teach you about the forced conversion of the Jews and then burning them alive in the name of ""Santa Inquicision"" Did you ever heard about the Holly inquisition Make a historical research to find out how the Catholic Chuch in Spain was Humane Those one who were expulsed were the lucky one who stayed alive.
38. #20
Eric ,   Toronto   (02.09.14)
Who can afford the Vancouver home prices??????
39. Aye, true enough, #27
Cameron ,   USA   (02.10.14)
With this move, the Arabs & Berbers of North Africa will be pressing day and night for entry into Spain and wider Europe.
40. No inferiority,complex or otherwise
joel kronfeld ,   NEPEAN   (02.10.14)
Daniel, the Spaniards have not changed in 500 years vis a vis the Jews. Remember, the Inquisition did not end 500 years ago . It persisted into the 19th (nineteen) century in South America. Spain's enmity to Jews and the Jewish State is obvious today.
41. Who wants to be spanish?
Larry ,   Northridge , usa   (02.10.14)
According to the IMF, Israel's per capita gdp is 34 thousand. Spain's is thirty thousand and shrinking. I cant imagine too many Israelis flocking to spain to seek economic opportunities, what with spains 26% unemployment. I do think its a pretty smart move by spain though, to help its failing economy,to bring in jews to save their anti-semetic butts.
42. Primarily Hispanics and North African Moslems will apply
Jake   (02.10.14)
"Ticket to a better future" for whom? Not for the descendants of Sephardic Jews in Israel and the Diaspora. Spain will be inundated with applications from Latin American Catholics claiming Sephardic ancestry. And before long, North African Moslems will also be claiming their "right of return" to Spain, 500 years after their expulsion.
43. Cynic #31, It was Euro discrimination
Jake   (02.10.14)
that got the Jews of Europe murdered in WW2 and exiled from Spain in 1492 in the first place. And that discrimination has never died. And by the way, you should look the statistics of the Jews murdered in the Holocaust. By percentage, the Sephardic Jews in Greece and elsewhere murdered in the Holocaust were among the highest.
44. Which part of the so called Golden Age?
joel kronfeld ,   NEPEAN   (02.10.14)
With the invasion of the fanatical El-Muhadi from north Africa , even the Rambam had to flee. A golden age is so tenuous. And that was long before 1492 . To be a Dhimmi ,may be okay when the alternative is a sword blow. It is much better to be a free man in ones own country, is it not?
45. So Sorry, but we are the Chosen Peoplel
joel kronfeld ,   NEPEAN   (02.10.14)
For what ever it means, that's what it says in the Bible. Oh, you don't believe. That's right. For you harm us for your interpretation of the Bible , and now after hundreds of years you do not believe at all in anything. So sorry, but we do. And we will persevere until the end. And for all of your ignorance and your name calling , well we have heard worse from the generic- you over the centuries.
46. Lets hope Shas can now relocate to spain
Haim ,   TA   (02.10.14)
I hear they have plenty of jails there too
47. Spanish surnames
EZ ,   BCN,ES   (02.10.14)
Rodriguez, Lopez, Gonzalez, etc. are surnames of visigothic origin and non-Jews. The termination "ez" means "son of" like "Mac" or "Mc" as Irish or Scottish. The "conquistadores" baptized with these surnames to native americans. These surnames are extended in america but does not mean they are spanish or jew origin.
48. Schlesinger
Schlesinger ,   USA   (02.11.14)
I'm a Schlesinger and I can trace back to Spain before my ancestors eventually started to associate as ashkenazi Jews. Not sure how common this is though.
49. List of names
aliza ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (02.12.14)
Does that also apply to people from Spanish Morroco? Where can I see the full list?
