1994, accepted Israel's RIGHT to be, to exist as the sovereign nation-state of the Jewish people. He merely, in 1994, and only in English..., accepted Israel's right to exist. Also, UN General Assembly resolution, 181, 1947, was not part of international law, only a UNGA recommendation. But, even as a proposal 181 was categorically rejected by the Arabs precisely for the reason that they reject Israel's RIGHT to be, to exist as the sovereign nation-state of the Jewish people today.

It should be instructive to Kerry that in 1947, though it was in a UN resolution that there should be a Jewish State, It was never recognized by the Arab states. In addition, Arafat never signed an agreement which recognized Israel as a Jewish State. While Israel doesn't need any country to recognize it as being Jewish, the refusal of Abbas to do so proves his malevolence towards Israel and his hope that eventually it will be over run by Palestinians.

...this would be a hardening of position and a u-turn, which would definitely be a deal breaker. It would also be interesting to hear what Abbas thinks about Kerry's interpretation. Seems, every time Kerry doesn't get Abbas to agree on something essential and substantial, it becomes suddenly not smart to insist on it. The conflict was sown by refutation to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The Arabs never recognized UN resolutions in 1947-48. Of course to end a state of war and sign a treaty you must recognize that which you have denied for so long. That Kerry cannot see this shows his state of mind ... he'll do anything today to make his proposals work. But Israel is signing a treaty that needs to be valid tomorrow, not a meaningless piece of paper. Do you really believe a Palestinian state will be viable and functional to keep its promises?
