1. YES i have seen this poverty in many families!
Riva ,   Israel   (04.08.14)
It would help if the government would issue food stamps, lots of them, to supplement all incomes 7000nis and under!
2. An often overlooked reason for poverty among divorced women
me ,   here   (04.08.14)
and their children is that she, according to law, receives less matrimony from the exhusband the more she earns for a salary. Even if she works more, it won't improve the situation for her and her children. And in order to get a divorce from her husband, the woman is often forced to accept less in matrimony and rights. The austerity means described in this article are well-known to me. No fruit, meat, cheese or yoghurt for years. Learned about frugal living on American websites and so have put food on the ta (Been there, done it, seen it.)
3. Shapira wouldn't happen ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.08.14)
.... to be talking about the Satmer and the Neturei Karta, and their families with children in double digits, now, would he? Why on earth would the State of Israel be concerned about the welfare of people who are vehemently opposed to the very existence of the State? They don't pay taxes, they demand housing large enough for their enormous families, and they don't pay rent because they do not recognize any authority in the State of Israel. Except they are all very quick to use up enormous amounts of Israeli social services and Israeli medical care. I'd put Israel's aged population at the top of the list. The State of Israel deniers -- Satmer, Neturei Karta -- can exercise a little birth control. If you can't afford them, you have no business having them. And the way these people are inbred, their children are walking genetic timebombs, anyway. The drain they impose on Israel's social services and educational programs is staggering -- and they don't contribute one thin dime to the revenue of the State. A bunch of non-Jewish schnorrers is what they are.
4. Obviously Lapid made a difference
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.08.14)
Where is the money saved by cutting benefits to Haredim gone?
5. You must thank 'your' elected (not any sane person's choice)
Danny   (04.08.14)
MK Yair Lapid who cut benefits causing hundreds of thousands Israelis to go hungry.
6. blame Lapid
(04.08.14)
Most of the poor are Haredim. Lapid and the extreme Left specifically targeted the Haredim by taking their monthly salary. Why are they surprised now that there are so many poor?
7. Yad Ezra V’Shulamit
Borislava ,   Sofia, Bulgaria   (04.08.14)
If someone wants and is able, can help
8. priorities
sharpshin ,   USA   (04.09.14)
$9 billion (US) in arms exports annually to clients Israel won't name, but no money to feed nearly 1 million hungry people. $3 billion (US) in infrastructure for a strike on Iran, but hunger ignored. An amount in the 100s of millions that the Knesset refuses to disclose for settlements outside the country, but nothing on the table of the poor. Lovely.
9. Corruption Exists
Zechariah   (04.08.14)
There is Diversion of Donations from the Gallus Destined for the Poor and Elderly WhatHappened to Meir Panim. So Olmert and his Supporters ought pay back Ten Fold what they took and do Life Long Community Service .Next the Moguls and Exploiting Developers ought give voluntarily with the USA Gates and Buffett as examples to follow and Match .Same with the Gallus with their Ferraris Audis Mansions and Yaughts .At least they could learn Submarine Escape .
10. To: No. 2
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.08.14)
I think you mean "alimony." Not "matrimony." So, you didn't have enough money to put food on the table, but you managed to afford a computer and internet service. Interesting set of priorities.
11. To: No. 6
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (04.08.14)
Why should the haredim get a free ride when the overwhelming majority of healthy adults in Israel actually work for a living? The one good thing that Lapid did was cut their benefits. Bunch of freeloaders is what they are.
12. 3 The Satmers never took money
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (04.08.14)
from the State and they are not poor.Their children are not hungry, thanks G-D The orthodox rich people help the needy ones. It are the Secular poor people that are suffering from Lapid's austerity politic.
13. Bibi make peace with the neighbors and let economy and trade grow+new markets instead....
David   (04.09.14)
14. Disgrace
Dr Williams ,   Newcastle U.K.   (04.08.14)
absolutely disgracefull Children in Gaza don't have such problems!
15. #2. Men dont have to give you a dime
Peter ,   Jerusalem   (04.09.14)
Why dont you pay your former husband some alimony? You are getting a free ride and yet complain. Next time dont divorce.
16. Having workers in the house can be awful since so many
Rivkah   (04.09.14)
of them sabotage the property or slander the employers or even harm the children or pets in nefarious ways. It is better to have a small home that one can clean and care for oneself than to have people come into your home you pay to help you who hate you for having a home and plot to harm the employers and the property. It seems almost universal that employees hate the person who pays them. Loyalty is something of the past. My grandmother had the same helper, Hattie Pitts, for SIXTY YEARS. That is the sort of loyalty that used to be common but now is rare.
17. Like in the U.S. many Israelis seem grossly overweight.
Michael ,   California, USA   (04.09.14)
I must have been seeing things through bad glasses or gone to the wrong places during my last visit home. I saw many overweight people in Israel recently; it resembled Los Angeles. I apologize to the one million hungry Israelis, but I didn't see them. Maybe it's because I boycotted Jerusalem and never went there? To remind the reader, I boycott Jerusalem because the municipality there is way too soft on Haredim and their abuses.
18. The poor in Israel
Yoel ,   Israel   (04.09.14)
