I think the odor you detect comes from the bilge pumps on the GAZA ARC. That thing wouldn't get five nautical miles off the coast of Gaza before sinking. Imagine the size of some of the tankers and dry bulk vessels that traverse the maritime lanes in the Mediterranean ... imagine the wake those vessels throw -- the GAZA ARC would founder, then sink.
