Leave the freedom of defining our country to us Jews and to us Jews alone. You know - the rights of the individual, democracy, the integrity of individuals and a nation, the right of self determination - do these words ring a bell or two? The right of self determination - does it apply only to non-Jews? Or to Jews as well? Israel's identity is sacred and is not a matter of debate. If you debate it, I will consider you an enemy of Israel. And no - this is not a matter of debate, negotiation or compromise - ever. Butt out.

Bravo! A round of applause, please. A lengthy, convincing exposition - right? Well...not quite. A major problem is your notion of an 'ethnic nation-state'. A question: is a member of the Sami community in Sweden a 'real' Swede - or a 'foreigner'? Their native tongue is not Swedish, they have their own way of life, they are not 'ethnic' Swedes. However, they have inhabited territory of Sweden long before the ancestors of the majority population arrived. Come to think of it, the Romaniote Jewish population inhabited Greece long before there was a Greece (until most of them were deported to the death camps by the Nazis). So, the idea of the 'ethnic' nation-state is a bit problematic since it can justify all kinds actions: Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, the 'protection' of Ukranian 'Russians', etc. Don't go down that road. There is a better rationale for Israel: it is the national home for the Jewish people and it exists today for all sorts of historical reasons. Therefore, as a nation-state, it has every right to defend itself. However, Israel is not exclusively a Jewish country; it has others living within its borders who are not foreigners and the state needs to reflect that fact - as the city of Haifa, in fact, is proud to give pride of place to the Bahai Gardens in its publicity!

In an ethnic nation state, its the host population's identity that takes precedence over the minorities. If it doesn't - its not a nation state. This is a global universal daily fact of life accepted all over the world. Non-Jews do not have any national rights of any kind despite the fact that they live in Israel. They are and remain foreigners living in my country. A statement to the contrary means war against my freedom and national rights. I'm the master of the land - non-Jews are foreigners. And I am a foreigner in the very European country I was born in. I don't have any national rights of any kind in the European country in which I was born. Spare me your superflous nonsensical comments. This is the very proof that you don't recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Yes Israel is exclusively a Jewish country in the sense that only Jews have national rights to claim the land and to claim national independence and sovereignty in Israel. Yes non-Jews in Israel are foreigners, since its not their land, they are not the natives, it's not their historical homeland. If Israel is as much Arab and Druze, Moslem and Christian - as Jewish, it means you don't recognize Israel as a Jewish state. There is no "sharing" of national rights or national identity in a nation state even if minorities happen to live there. Jews have lived for 1000 years in Poland. Are you suggesting that Poland is or has ever been a bi-national Polish-Jewish state with Polish and Hebrew as official languages and a Polish-Jewish government, national Anthem, political system and constitution? Are you suggesting that Iran, Turkey and the Arab states belong to the Jews too since they have lived there for thousands of years? So why is it that their flags and national identities do not represent Jews then? And why don't Jewish symbols and places of worship constitute the main symbols of Cairo, Istanbul, Ankara, Teheran or Baghdad? Spare me your racist hypocritical nonsense. Regarding the Sami people - if you ask the Swedes - yes. Are you suggesting that the Swedish flag and the Swedish national character are indicative of the Sami identity? I don't Think so. While the Sami are no doubt native to northern Sweden, the Swedes consider them to be foreigners. I don't support the Swedes' behavior against the Sami, but we are not debating whether I support the Swedes or not. It's a fact Bertram - the Swedes consider the Sami to be foreigners and Sweden's national character reflects the Swedish identity. Can you deny that? Regarding Germany and Russia: nobody threatens or has threatened these countries and these countries violated international, started wars of aggression, massacred civilians and invaded independent and sovereign states. Your comparison is absurd.

israel's declaration of independence states clearly that israel is the jewish state, the state where jews established their spiritual, religious, political lives, where they gave the world the eternal book of books. israel is the land where king david built jerusalem, where his son king solomon built the first jewish temple and where returning exiles built the second jewish temple. israel is the land where jews have lived uninterupted for over three thousand years and where the the nations of the world recognised the right of the jewish people their historic relations to the land.
