The only reason that the United States sent spare parts to Israel in 1973 was because Israel had surrounded the Egyptian Third Army and cut its supply lines. The IDF also crossed the Suez Canal and stood poised to march on Cairo, with nothing standing in its way. By the time the U.S. sent the spare parts, Israel had already turned the tide, and would have taken Cairo and Damascus. The United States saved its own hindquarters in 1973. Because Israel WOULD have taken Cairo, and we WOULD have taken Damascus. And that was the only reason which prompted Sadat to make his historic move a few years later. He realized that the Arabs could not defeat Israel militarily. He did not want to be remembered as the Egyptian who lost Cairo to the Jews.
