The loss of lives on both sides of this conflict is a humanitarian tragedy which has reached a stage at which any effort to prevent / minimise civilian casualties seems futile. A humanitarian ceasefire was offered but rejected. How, in the face of such suffering, can anyone refuse to stop the loss of further lives and to try and talk instead? The pictures and reports from the region are devastating and heartbreaking, and the situation, no doubt, looks more desperate in Gaza than in Israel where citizens at least have some shelter. I would hope though… that people from around the world will not fail to show the same respect for the lives of the young Israeli soldiers and for their families as behind every uniform is a human being…, that they will not forget about the continuous threat Israel’s citizens have been exposed to… and that they will try to imagine just how grotesque it would be if they had missiles sent across to them from any of THEIR neighbouring countries... As a German, I feel extremely privileged to be able to live in peace. Sadly, this cannot be taken for granted by people in Israel / Gaza. And sadly there is probably little that we can contribute to peace. Showing solidarity with ALL victims and supporting any peace initiative even on a small scale (rather than labelling Israel as the aggressor) would appear to be the least we can do. And allowing this humanitarian crisis to be used for anti-Semitic propaganda is the WORST we can do – it's disgusting and an offence to the dignity of anyone suffering from the conflict. If ‘Winning together’ means exploiting all options to restore peace, the campaign has my full support.
