In New Zealand too, the concept of leasehold is that you occupy the unit but you pay moderate rent for the grounds. Now the monthly lease payments for the ground are identical to what you would have paid for a mortgage on your own freehold property. Some developers can't let go of the land. They will make you pay full price for the apartment, but they keep owning the land below. What are you going to do? take your condo with you?
