I was a hyall boded from 1973 until 1976. At the liscat gius I was that as I didn't have any relatives in Israel and nowhere to stay whilst on leave the army would give me money so that I could rent a room. They told me that it wouldn't be enough to rent in one of the major towns or cities but would be enough to get a room in somewhere like Kiryat Smoneh. After I joined up the money was never given to me in spite of speaking to my samelet sud every time she visited my base. I used to go to the solders houses which were in Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. I didn't see my civilian clothes for over a year when I agreed reluctantly to be send to a kibbutz. A Canadian friend who I shared a room with and became a sergeant in the Golani got a hernia and his officers refused to send him to a doctor and accused him of being lazy. I have a lot of bad memories from my time in Israel and wouldn't recommend anyone to join the Israeli army. They don't care about you. (should read "I was told that" above - this website won't allow corrections without typing everything again). Before I joined up my Dad told me not to join as they only wanted people like me for cannon fodder. I didn't believe him but now think that he was right.
