It doesn't sound the "distance" to her peers in Germany was insurmountable. It definitely sounds her cultural identity was protected by her peers under the Nazis. But anyhow, if she is happy now, let it give more Power to her in life, wherever she decides to stay. Her children and grandchildren will connect to a happy person in their family and she can tell them stories about the great grandfather. Being multi-cultural and of mixed heritage is desirable, always.
