Terror alert prompts crossing’s closure
Gaza's Erez crossing closed in the past due to terror warnings; meanwhile, IDF to ease more restrictions on Palestinians By Ronen Greenberg GAZA - The Erez crossing in north Gaza remained closed Sunday following terror alerts received by security authorities during the Pesach holiday. The crossing, which had been shut down on a number of occasions during the holiday due to terror warnings, is expected to reopen Monday.
Prior to the holiday, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz ordered a full closure of the territories, but in what was regarded as an unusual move, decided the Erez crossing would remain open, as only a small number of Palestinian workers were expected to enter the country during the holiday.
The crossing was reopened in recent weeks after it had been closed down for a long period of time due to a wave of terror attacks.
More restrictions to be eased IDF sources said the recent incidents in Gaza, including mortar shell and sniper fire and the detonation of bombs, are not necessarily connected to the current terror alert. Meanwhile, the security establishment is planning a series of additional concessions to Gaza and West Bank Palestinians this week, including the issuing of various permits that have not been granted as of yet. In addition, progress regarding the handover of the West Bank town of Qalqiliya to Palestinian control is also expected this week.
