Israeli security sources say the men were Islamic Jihad commanders involved in the execution of several

terror attacks agaisnt Israeli targets, some of which were carried out during the relative lull in fighting.

The village is known as an Islamic Jihad stronghold but is also home to wanted terror suspects belonging to other groups.

However Palestinian sources say that both men are senior member in Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and identified them as Ibrahim Abahara, and his brother Warad.

The forces arrived in the village with the intention of detaining the terror suspects and encircled the house they were hiding in. However, the terrorists, who were behind a series of recent attacks in the northern West Bank, ignored the soldiers’ calls to surrender.

At one point a bulldozer was brought to the scene and began razing the house, prompting the two terrorists to open fire at troops. The two men were killed following a short exchange of fire.

One of the terrorists killed, Ibrahim Abahara, was responsible for preparing the explosive belt used by a suicide bomber he sent to a bus station in Haifa in December 2001, where dozens of Israelis were injured.

IDF: Campaign against Islamic Jihad continues

No injuries were reported among security forces.

IDF officials say Tuesday’s operation marks the continuation of the IDF’s campaign against the Islamic Jihad, which continues to plan attacks. The two killed terrorists were senior figures in the group and the army wanted to detain them before the upcoming pullout, the officials said.

The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the last two major suicide bombings in Israel, at the Sharon Mall in Netanya and at the Stage nightclub in Tel Aviv.
