Settlers uphold sports tradition

The Kissufim crossing is closed, but in Gush Katif it’s business as usual - Neve Dekalim beats Netzer Hazani in final of traditional basketball tournament between settlements. Winning coach says regarding pullout, ‘Just like in sports, it ain't over till it's over’

Despite the fact that the Kissufim crossing is closed and the IDF has already handed out eviction notices, Gush Katif settlers are doing everything to present a “business as usual” attitude.

On Monday, less than 48 hours before the forced evacuation of settlers who refuse to leave the area willingly is schedule to begin, the final of the traditional Gush Katif basketball tournament was held in the newly-built arena in Neve Dekalim – probably for the last time.

Due to the fact that the IDF has restricted traffic between the settlements, the organizers obtained special permits from military authorities, and the tournament proceeded following a minor delay.

Neve Dekalim beat Netzer Hazani 50:45 to take first-place honors, but the settlers had more on their minds than just basketball.

“This game has helped ease a lot of tensions,” winning coach Gabi Azriely said.

“Initially I thought it would be inappropriate to hold the tournament at a time such as this, but I’m glad that I succumbed to the guys’ pressure.”

As to the settler struggle, Azriely said, “Although it seems like a lost cause, I believe whole-heartedly that the lord will change the situation, and that no carton box will enter my home.”

“There is an old sports cliche - it ain't over till it's over.”

Neve Dekalim star Ephraim Manshari, 18, is set to begin his studies at a Hebron yeshiva.

“Last year I was asked if the basketball tournament will be held this year,” he said.

“Now I am giving the same answer – I believe the tournament will be held in 2006 as well.”
