Palestinians recruited for Al-Qaeda

Military Court in Salem, Samaria, hears severe indictment against two Palestinians from Nablus who recruited suicide bombers to carry out attacks for al-Qaeda

Has Al-Qaeda sent tentacles into the territories? Two Nablus residents and members of al-Qaeda have been accused of trying to recruit for terror attacks. An indictment was submitted against them in the Salem military court in Samaria, in the West Bank.

The two men – Azzam abu-al-Adas and Balal Hafnawi, both in their 20s – are accused of having contact with al-Qaeda in Jordan, and drafting others to carry out attacks in Israel, including the use of car bombs.

The indictment also added that the two men attempted to set up an al-Qaeda terrorist infrastructure in Nablus, and to recruit suicide bombers. The money for the attacks was received from al-Qaeda's Jordan branch.

The terrorists planned to dispatch a suicide bomber to explode among diners, and immediately upon hearing the explosion, other terrorists would have set off a car bomb in another street through a mobile phone or watch.

The terrorists planned to rent a house in Jerusalem, to be used as a base to plan the attack, and in which the terrorist was supposed to lodge, before setting off for the attack.

Members of the terror ring asked for 5,000 Jordanian dinars for the attack. An al-Qaeda member in Jordan, Abdullah Hajawi, promised to look into the matter, and asked the men to draft more members for al-Qaeda.

The indictment listed additional places targeted for the attacks: The area of Nave Shaanan Street and the old central station in Tel Aviv, and the bus station on Yoseftal Street in Jerusalem.

The two men possessed explosives and helped make them. An al-Qaeda member in Jordan promised to send an al-Qaeda member in Gaza, who would train the accused in carrying out attacks.

Palestinians: IDF and Shin Bet intercepted internet communication

A Palestinian security source told Ynet that contact was made between the arrested Palestinians and an al-Qaeda agent in Jordan, via the internet, which was intercepted by the IDF and Shin Bet, as occurred many times throughout the intifada, especially in the recent period.

Palestinian believe that Israeli security officials were updated on the contacts from their commencement. The security source says that two weeks before their arrest, Hafnawi left the territories and set out to Jordan, and returned days later with a large amount of money.

The Palestinian security source said that Hafnawi and Abu al-Adas are youths who were not involved in political acts and were not religious extremists. "They are two guys who in the current intifada has no involvement in security issue, Abu al-Adas hardly left the house during the intifdada, bur what he did do is sit for hours in front of the computer, and the contact with agent from Jordan was formed over the internet, but there is no chance in the world that the two did it out of ideological motivations," said the source, who added that only money interested the two accused men.

On Tuesday afternoon, a terror attack was thwarted, when an explosives device weighing 5 – 7 kilograms was intercepted in a commercial vehicle on Highway 1 connecting Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.

The chase to apprehend the terrorist lasted a number of hours, and saw an increased level of alert around Jerusalem and the highway to Tel Aviv.
