McDonald's launches World Cup burger

New Greek Royal smaller than regular burger, but has green tehina on top

McDonald's recently launched a new hamburger called the Royal Mondial in honor of the Football World Cup scheduled to begin on June 9, Israel's leading newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported Thursday.

The new burger has a spicy Greek flavor and resembles a kebab, the company's salespersons explained. Instead of the regular mayonnaise addition, it includes green tehina, onion and tomatoes.

The problem is that the new Greek burger weighs 30 grams (1.05 ounces) less than the regular McRoyal, while the price remains the same: NIS 19.50 (about USD 4.4) when eating it alone, or NIS 39.90 (USD 9) as part of a meal.

In response to Yedioth Ahronoth's inquiry, the company said that the Royal Mondial hamburger, officially called Greek Royal, is a new product which was introduced into the chain's stores in honor of the World Cup games, and as a different product it cannot be compared to the existing McRoyal.

"However," the company spokesperson added, "eventually, after the grilling and because of the different grilling method, the difference between the two products stands at only 5 grams (0.175 ounces), and the two weigh approximately 100 grams (3.5 ounces), because of the different structure of the two products."
