Operation Accountability
Increased Israeli casualties led to Operation Accountability in 1993 Ynetnews Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin ordered the IDF to launch Operation Accountability on July 25, 1993, in response to increased Hizbullah attacks on northern Israeli communities that resulted in heavy civilian casualties. The operation included air strikes on terror targets across Lebanon, as well as heavy artillery fire in the south of the country . The premise of Operation Accountability was that military attacks of this nature would cause Lebanese civilians to flee South Lebanon, consequently forcing the Syrian and Lebanese governments to restrain Hizbullah. In response to the Israeli campaign, Hizbullah fired dozens of Katyushas at Israel’s north. Two Israeli civilians were killed, and 13 wounded. Despite repeated attempts, the IDF was unable to halt the missile attacks. During the course of the operation, one IDF soldier was killed, and three wounded. Considerable damage was caused to southern Lebanon’s infrastructure, and Israel endured a wave of international criticism. After about a week of fighting, a US-mediated ceasefire was declared. A bilateral agreement was drafted limiting the scope of the fighting.
However, the ceasefire agreements were not sustainable, forcing Israel to launch Operation Grapes of Wrath three years later.
