US senator meets Syrian president for talks

US Senator Bill Nelson met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday, a week after a US bipartisan panel recommended the Bush administration engage Syria to help stabilize Iraq.

Nelson, a Democrat, was named to the Senate Intelligence Committee this week and said he was on a fact-finding mission to the region. He left later for Amman, Jordan. (Reuters)
