Official symbol for Israel's 60th anniversary chosen

Knesset's Symbols and Ceremonies Committee votes on official symbol marking country's 60th year. Symbol shows a child holding a white-blue cloth forming the figure 60

The Knesset's Symbols and Ceremonies Committee decided recently on Israel's official symbol for its 60th anniversary, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Wednesday.

Israel – today and tomorrow. 60th anniversary symbol

The symbol, which features a child holding a white and blue sheet of cloth swirling into the figure 60, did not agree with Minister Yitzhak Cohen (Shash), who claimed the child looked "frumpy and should get a haircut."

"A symbol is supposed to stand for the common denominator… if we want the Israeli children and their parents to identify with it, it should feature a child looking like 'the kid next door'," said Cohen.

When it comes to choosing between creative graphic design and a simple symbolic statement, he added, the choice should be obvious.

Members of the Knesset's Symbols and Ceremonies Committee were – to say the least – amused by Cohen's remark, and proceeded to approve the presentation.
