Hanukkah: Sufganiyot sales to decline

Manufacturers Association of Israel anticipates drop in Hanukkah donuts sales, an increase in candles' sales; says Israelis will consume some 17.5 million yummy units over holiday

Israelis are buying less sufganiyot (Hanukkah donuts) and more Hanukkah candles, the Manufacturers Association of Israel reported Monday.

A new survey held by the MAI estimated that Hanukkah 2007 will see only 17.5 million sufganiyot sold – a 4% drop from 2006, citing "the obvious health reasons".

The average Israeli is expected to consume about three sufganiyot during the holiday. Sales are expected to reach $14.04 million.

The MAI survey also reveled that 30% of the sufganiyot sold – some 6 million units – will be "fun-sized", weighing in at 35 grams, as opposed to the 80 grams of its plumppier siblings.

Hanukkah 2007 is expected to yield $1.17 million in candle sales – a 10% rise form last year.

According to MAI data, some $2.2 millions worth of Hanukkah candles were exported to the Jewish communities in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK and France – a 10% increase from Hanukkah of 2006.
