Iran asks for non-permanent UN Security Council seat
Islamic republic's foreign minister says membership could 'create a positive development in the performance of the Security Council' Associated Press Iran's foreign minister says he has asked the Non-Aligned Movement to support Iran's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Manouchehr Mottaki tells an expert meeting of the 114-member group to support Iran's bid to have a seat on the Security Council that will meet in 2009 and 2010.
He says Sunday that a vote is expected soon and Iran's membership could "create a positive development in the performance of the Security Council." The Non-Aligned Movement includes countries that tried to act as a buffer between East and West during the Cold War.
