US Congress: Israel homeland for Jewish people

In honor of Israel's 60th anniversary, Congress passes resolution pledging to strengthen US-Israel bond; Israel's US Ambassador: Resolution testimony to America's unwavering support

WASHINGTON – On the same week the Ben-Ami Kadish espionage affair  threatened to harm US-Israeli relations, the US Congress has passed a resolution in honor of Israel's 60th anniversary that describes the bond between the two countries and pledges to boost it in the future.

In the resolution, the US "recognizes the historic significance of the 60th anniversary of the reestablishment of the sovereign and independent State of Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people."

The resolution, which passed in a unanimous vote on Tuesday and Thursday that saw all the 100 senators in the two houses of Congress participating, recognizes "the 60th anniversary of the founding of the modern State of Israel and reaffirming the bonds of close friendship and cooperation between the United States and Israel."

Israeli Ambassador to the US, Sallai Meridor, expressed his satisfaction with the resolution and said it is a testimony to the special friendship between the two countries as well as a strong message to the enemies of Israel about the unwavering US support for Israel.

Continuous Jewish presence

The resolution recognizes that "the desire of the Jewish people to establish an independent modern State of Israel is an outgrowth of the existence of the historic kingdom of Israel established in the Land of Israel 3,000 years ago, with the city of Jerusalem as its capital.

"For over 2,000 years, there has been continuous Jewish presence and residence in the land comprising the modern State of Israel," the resolution reads, and adds that "the establishment of the modern State of Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people followed the slaughter of more than six million European Jews during the Holocaust."

The resolution also states that since Israel's establishment 60 years ago, "the modern State of Israel has rebuilt a nation, forged a new and dynamic democratic society, and created a thriving economic, political, cultural, and intellectual life despite the heavy costs of war, terrorism, and unjustified diplomatic and economic boycotts against the people of Israel."
